Congrats to Thiem on winning his maiden Masters 1000 and becoming the 17th active player to hold 1 of these titles! This is his 12th ATP title and the biggest to date and also the first this season. He also becomes the first Austrian player to win a Masters title since Muster (who won 8 of them so Thiem has got a fair way to go to catch him up). He also becomes the first Austrian player to win in Indian Wells.
Thiem also dened fedr’s bid to become the Tour’s first multiple champion...that’s parity when you have 19 different champions.

The fact Fed was rallying so much tells you he deserved to lose the match. Terrible tactical match, he should have brought the volleying arsenal even on slow-as-molasses high bouncing courts. But as happens so often, Fed loses his way after a first set victory and slogs though the remainder of the match. The better player won today. I hope this gives Dom the impetus he needs to beat Nadal and Djokovic in big matches.
I don’t think he played a tactically terrible match. Had he come to net more, Thiem just would have passed him more. Thiem, similar to young Nadal and Djokovic, has extraordinary speed that is able to defend against 37-yo Fed’s aggressive shots. There were too many times today when Fed came in where Thiem was able to get to the approach shot, set his feet and tee off a shot that either passed Fed or was too hot to handle. As you said, the (slightly) better man won today.

Man, it sucks to wake up early in the morning then to see Fed lose like that. This loss is going to sting for rest of the day.

LMAO @ Federer. I didn't see the match, but I knew what caused the loss the moment I saw Federer was defeated. I came home, looked at the stats, and Federer was 2/11 on Break Points. LOL.

This is classic post-2010 Federer.

Alright, well done to Thiem.

And also well done to Roger. I'm already over this loss, did more than I expected in this tournament. Would have been nice to bag 101, but always going to be a tough ask at M1000 level.

On to Miami.

As a Fed fan, I'm very disappointed, but at the same time...thinking long-term about his legacy: his record will not be safe if these younger guys don't start breaking through, right now.

So Thiem "breaking his duck" here might very well be the thing that triggers him to go on and deny Nadal and Djoker more Slams after Fed is gone. And if he can do it, then the others might start to believe in themselves to do it as well.

Congrats to Thiem! Federer did some attacking with drop shots like Bianca Andreescu and ROS + some defending like Kerber (he ran a lot).

That's what I thought until I saw that Federer wasted BPs especially in the first set, that he won (he was 2/8).

Federer is just too inconsistent from the ground these days. It’s almost like every time he has to hit a groundstroke you’re surprised it goes over the net. Thiem on the other hand was crushing forehands at will.

I always thought that Thiem's best shot was on Clay. I did not expect that his first Masters title will come on Hard. Maybe his Hard Court game has improved over the years. If he is consistent on hard courts, he is going to become a threat to Top players from now on.

LMFAO. Stealthy attempt to hype next gen detected

Let us talk when they show up in majors

We are having Anderson. Isner and Delpo making SF and finals and not those guys .

Thiem won 8 games at FO

Cilic also won 8 games in the final of WImbledon 2017 against your idol.

Nah. You're being harsh on Fed. Fed played pretty well this IW19. Sure, it wasn't Fed's cleanest match a la SF/F of Dubai, but Thiem was peaking, bashing, and most of his heavier-than-normal FHs went in for most of late set2, and all of set3. DT's FH speeds went from 74mph in set1, to about 78mph in set2, to about 84mph in set3. That's THORhand level. And... he barely beat Fed.

iirc, Thiem was crushing it at Madrid18 SF beating Nadal, then couldn't reproduce it for the finals against Z and got straight setted.

Would be nice if Thiem really can produce similar level as this more often moving forward.

Don't take my word for it, here's what Fed said:

There's never been a 37 year old in a Masters 1000 final, so it's all uncharted territory.

Rosewall won the WCT trophy (an important title at that time) with an age similar to the one Federer has now.
The Australian still has the longevity of the open era.

Yeah but with all due respect to Rosewall tennis pre 1990 was a joke compared to today’s tennis In terms of athleticism, speed and power.

It’s just tough to see Fed get out muscled on the forehand side these days. I felt like Tsitsipas definitely outplayed and outhit him from the baseline at the Australian as well. In the past guys like a Djokovic would wear him down with defence but now he’s getting outhit from the baseline. It’s amazing he’s still making finals at 38.

and in 50 years when you and I will be older than Rosewall is now, generations of the future will laugh at Federer, Nadal and Djokovic as we do for those tennis players of that time.

This is by choice, he takes the ball so early on such difficult shots. It works surprisingly well a lot of the time but not always.

Why he didn't slice enough? That's what I do not understand. I felt Roger should have sliced a lot more..

Definitely, Thiem targeted his BH on the serve and Roger tried driving all of them (like Shapo) and missed 90%. Then in the final games of the third he reverted to the slide and almost broke! Like... Dude.

Yeah I agree he does take everything on the rise and standing back 2 meters behind the baseline at 38 years old would be a stupid strategy. He definitely looks better on quicker courts like Dubai. I hate how all these courts are slow and high bouncing nowadays.

Fed gets overpowered more now than in the past, but it happened then too. But this is a symptom of age, no? ;)

This was PEAK Thiem, yet he won by a very slim margin today on a court that completely favors his game, and they played late in the day, a condition even worse for Fed. This loss stings a bit bc he had real chances to win it, but Fed could still play better, and yes, at ~38! That's a good thing! I'm happy with Fed's current form going forward. This form makes him a contender everywhere imo, even on clay, and especially at Wimby.

To Miami we go!

Didn't see the match, will watch it today.

Massive congratulations to Thiem for finally winning a long overdue Masters title. Never thought it would come on hard, but glad he got over the hurdle. Now, I hope this isn't a one off, and he can build on this, gain momentum and take it into the clay season.

Commiserations to Federer, so close yet again, but after winning his 100th title coming in, its not too bad and he defended his points. Still think he has a couple of titles in him this year.

Congratulations to Thiem and his fans that stood by him for years ;)

Beating Federer in a final is extra super duper sweet

Got to love those explosive backhand down the line shots from DT. The OHBH follow through makes it look more dramatic than the two handers.

The jump that tennis made from 1970 to 2019 would be a lot bigger than the one from 2019 to 2069. Players would be probably better in a new ways but not by a wild margin like comparing Federer and Rosewall

Absolutely this. A lot of people blaming tactics etc. Plain and simple, Fed just misses makeable shots too often these days. I think some of that has to do with tiring in the rallies, other times it just seems a consequence of the way he plays.

He did actually have his chances to win, he just missed them.
