Thiem also dened fedr’s bid to become the Tour’s first multiple champion...that’s parity when you have 19 different champions.Congrats to Thiem on winning his maiden Masters 1000 and becoming the 17th active player to hold 1 of these titles! This is his 12th ATP title and the biggest to date and also the first this season. He also becomes the first Austrian player to win a Masters title since Muster (who won 8 of them so Thiem has got a fair way to go to catch him up). He also becomes the first Austrian player to win in Indian Wells.
I don’t think he played a tactically terrible match. Had he come to net more, Thiem just would have passed him more. Thiem, similar to young Nadal and Djokovic, has extraordinary speed that is able to defend against 37-yo Fed’s aggressive shots. There were too many times today when Fed came in where Thiem was able to get to the approach shot, set his feet and tee off a shot that either passed Fed or was too hot to handle. As you said, the (slightly) better man won today. The fact Fed was rallying so much tells you he deserved to lose the match. Terrible tactical match, he should have brought the volleying arsenal even on slow-as-molasses high bouncing courts. But as happens so often, Fed loses his way after a first set victory and slogs though the remainder of the match. The better player won today. I hope this gives Dom the impetus he needs to beat Nadal and Djokovic in big matches.
There's absolutely nothing about this pic to hate, nothing whatsoever.Congrats Thiem!! ohh my boy you have done it!!
I hate this pic on atpworldtour.com homepage!
I am sure you are getting what am trying to highlight in this picThere's absolutely nothing about this pic to hate, nothing whatsoever.
I am and I think it's wonderful.I am sure you are getting what am trying to highlight in this pic
Fed tooooo many backhand unforced errors. I don't know the # but had to be a lot.
LMAO @ Federer. I didn't see the match, but I knew what caused the loss the moment I saw Federer was defeated. I came home, looked at the stats, and Federer was 2/11 on Break Points. LOL.
This is classic post-2010 Federer.
LMFAO. Stealthy attempt to hype next gen detected
Let us talk when they show up in majors
We are having Anderson. Isner and Delpo making SF and finals and not those guys .
Thiem won 8 games at FO
How about stopping them in slams? The guy is turning 26 this year FFS.
Federer is just too inconsistent from the ground these days. It’s almost like every time he has to hit a groundstroke you’re surprised it goes over the net. Thiem on the other hand was crushing forehands at will.
There's never been a 37 year old in a Masters 1000 final, so it's all uncharted territory.
Rosewall won the WCT trophy (an important title at that time) with an age similar to the one Federer has now.
The Australian still has the longevity of the open era.
Nah. You're being harsh on Fed. Fed played pretty well this IW19. Sure, it wasn't Fed's cleanest match a la SF/F of Dubai, but Thiem was peaking, bashing, and most of his heavier-than-normal FHs went in for most of late set2, and all of set3. DT's FH speeds went from 74mph in set1, to about 78mph in set2, to about 84mph in set3. That's THORhand level. And... he barely beat Fed.
iirc, Thiem was crushing it at Madrid18 SF beating Nadal, then couldn't reproduce it for the finals against Z and got straight setted.
Would be nice if Thiem really can produce similar level as this more often moving forward.
Don't take my word for it, here's what Fed said:
Yeah but with all due respect to Rosewall tennis pre 1990 was a joke compared to today’s tennis In terms of athleticism, speed and power.
The meth dealer came through

Why he didn't slice enough? That's what I do not understand. I felt Roger should have sliced a lot more..
This is by choice, he takes the ball so early on such difficult shots. It works surprisingly well a lot of the time but not always.
It’s just tough to see Fed get out muscled on the forehand side these days. I felt like Tsitsipas definitely outplayed and outhit him from the baseline at the Australian as well. In the past guys like a Djokovic would wear him down with defence but now he’s getting outhit from the baseline. It’s amazing he’s still making finals at 38.
Yep. It's inevitableOn a cautionary note for Roger, this is the 2nd year in a row he has finished runner-up in a 3 set final at Indian Wells. Is he losing his clutchness in these type of finals?
Fed gets overpowered more now than in the past, but it happened then too. But this is a symptom of age, no?
This was PEAK Thiem, yet he won by a very slim margin today on a court that completely favors his game, and they played late in the day, a condition even worse for Fed. This loss stings a bit bc he had real chances to win it, but Fed could still play better, and yes, at ~38! That's a good thing! I'm happy with Fed's current form going forward. This form makes him a contender everywhere imo, even on clay, and especially at Wimby.
To Miami we go!
Fed's post-finals press:
And going by the trend, I expect fed to lose in first round of Miami
Kokk is playing?
and in 50 years when you and I will be older than Rosewall is now, generations of the future will laugh at Federer, Nadal and Djokovic as we do for those tennis players of that time.

He still stopped him from winning a slam.Cilic also did not stop Federer from winning a couple more grand slams.
.
I hope these titles aren't just basel and halleDidn't see the match, will watch it today.
Massive congratulations to Thiem for finally winning a long overdue Masters title. Never thought it would come on hard, but glad he got over the hurdle. Now, I hope this isn't a one off, and he can build on this, gain momentum and take it into the clay season.
Commiserations to Federer, so close yet again, but after winning his 100th title coming in, its not too bad and he defended his points. Still think he has a couple of titles in him this year.
