A little bit of the old confident Rafa out there tonight. Don't throw dirt on this guy yet.

If he can keep his confidence up and keep his form improving, he could take it all. Nole is gonna be an obstacle obviously but I think Nadal can beat anyone else in the tournament

Tonight so far is probably the best Rafa has looked this year truth be told

Only Novak stands in his way to the finals. If he beats Nole, he wins it all

This is probably the best Nadal has looked since the French of last year (And Im sure he will get better as each round goes). I don't think he will beat Nole but if he does he will take the title IMO.

This is probably the best tennis Nadal has brought this year. He looks fitter and and more focused than hes looked in a LONG time.

Best form from Rafa so far this year.. I like it.

Looks like someone was trying to be a bit positive today. Kudos for that :D

So Rafa's 10 year streak of winning at least 1 Slam per season has (unsurprisingly) finally come to an end. This year he didn't even make a final. His unbroken streak of never losing a match from 2 sets up at a Grand Slam has also come to an end. For Rafa, this has truly been a season to forget!

Will this match prove to be a turning point in Fabio's career, the moment when he finally put the clowning and the tantrums to one side and finally knuckled down to be a serious contender for the big titles? Let's hope so!

So should Rafa shut it down for the rest of the season(not get more punishing losses) or take his lumps in Shanghai, Paris & London?

this is the stupidity/trolling here...Nadal is not injured...he keeps playing his regular schedule (gets more rest now)... the question is does he get his new "more powerful" racket out of the closet before the new season, and does he try some new tactics with little pressure and expectations on him?...or is he so obsessed with London he feels he has to keep everything the same through then?

I'm noticing aweird thing on this forum, that no one actually seems to enjoy watching entertaining tennis. They use it simply as a means to further their respective agendas for their favourite player of choice and use the opportunity to poop on players who are playing poorly or ridicule fans of those players. Nadal wasn't at his tip-top best, but he was more than decent tonight. He put on one of his more compelling performances this season and was one half of a magical match.

This was one hell of a match. Glad for Fognini. What a match. Right up there with Wozniacki-Cetkovska. Looks like this tournament may yet be salvaged with a few more incredible matches like these.

Stop letting basic trolls fool you. Any DUMB ASS "Nadal fan" that always says positive **** post after post, isn't a fan. But a lame-o trying to bait more hate.

Excuse me? Do you want me to post pics of my Bull gear? People evolve on issues. Obama evolved on gay marriage, etc

Do u guys ever stop and think that rafas game allows these guys to rip winners? This isnt anything new
He's been hitting balls that drop short his whole career; only in the last few years have players attacked them.

Sorry, playing the 'Nadal let him win' card isn't going to fly. If his game had deteriorated that much he'd be 32-32 on the yr w no titles.

The two best matches of the tournament were both on frightening friday, Bouchard - Cibulkova and Rafa - Fognini

the Woz-other Petra match was good too..the 32 seeds just make everything burn slowly now...bonfire tonight though..this was Blake-Aggasi stuff

ok ok. New to forum like this didn't realize people were crazy enough to pretend to be a fan of somebody they hate

Maybe some people, but I doubt it's many. I'm not one. I legitimately enjoy watching Bull's matches. Hence why I'm in his match threads but generally no one else's.

No if you look at beginner tennis, the top lesson to learn is hot to impart topspin onto balls.

This is slightly different level to Beginners but even my 3 yo son knows that unlike most zombies

the risk taking is just not there hence Hacker tennis is todays cure to amnesia

Fog showed real tennis fans a reason to stay awake

don't get fooled, look at who you are talking to

I used to hate Nadal.

When Fed declined in 2013 I thought it might've been it for him. But then he came back stronger.

To see Fed's most toughest and most fiercest rival suck like this does not make me happy. I hope Rafa comes back stronger in 2016, and wins Roland Garros again... after Fed wins USO and AO upcoming.

He has 15 losses this year and his wins were rinky dink tournaments

Right?

Everyone trying to bash Nadal here is annoying. He played very well. Still nothing short of an awesone player, and that comes from a Fed fan who has, obviously, suffered a lot because of him in the past.

For those who think this match was incredible (quality wise), in parts it was but the consistently mediocre serving allowed this match to look way better than it actually was. Nadal wasn't remotely close to Slam winning form. That's the reality. Those saying Nadal played very well are kidding themselves if they are truly comparing Nadal to the actual "playing very well" Nadal - the one who overall at the Slams makes a mockery of Federer and Djokovic and has won 14 Slams.

Get real yo.

had a break in the third too...still got work to do young man if you want the top of Troll Mt. to be yours
I'm serious. I really did stop watching after Rafa broke in the second. It was around 3:50 am here in the UK and I wanted to get sone sleep. Figured he had this onw in the bag. And tbh I just wasn'r enjoying the match.

Just because Stan changed his ways, you are expecting Fognini , Monfils and Gulbis to join them ?

If at all someone can change, it is probably Tsonga.

He did not play to win. Gave a poor handshake not in the spirit of the game. But we should be happy he didn't take a MTO.

Did you watch the match? Federer lost to Robredo last year...stop with the player bashing.

I'm convinced some posters in this thread didn't even watch the match. Amazing points from both players--easily the best hitting of the tournament. Both should be proud.
I'm with you. Lost some respect for a few posters in these last 15 or 20 minutes. No respect for the effort or quality. Sad.

Sure, but Fed looked nowhere near Slam winning form in the first week of 2012 Wimbledon. Yeah, it was lousy serving but a very high quality match off the ground.

Entertainment doesn't mean you have to be witnessing the greatest tennis in the history of the sport. Nor does it involve deconstructing the minutia of failed technique between losing and winning parties. Anyone who think that has long since lost sight of things. This match had a solid backstory coming into it, very nice hitting, good winners, changing dynamics, back-and-forths, great crowd involvement, trademark Nadal forehands, a bit of Italian spice and was a five-set thriller with so many dramatic breaks of serve I thought I was watching the WTA. Whoever can't see the entertainment about that should resign themselves to watching footage of Bollitieri's tennis Academy.

It's odd. I'm not even disappointed on this result. In fact, I'm happy with it. I'm sure the better player won. Players like Rafa, who refuse to evolve, should, in a just world, lose. I'm glad he did. He deserved it. Toni deserved it. Fognini deserved to win. In fact, I expected the Fog to fog Nadal in four. So...if anything Nadal did better than I expected him to.

I want to know what you're smoking. He smoked his first two opponents. Benneteau pushed him in 5 and then he somehow recovered against Malisse.

N_N : While Rafa can improve, I think it is not realistic to expect that he would reach the same levels of the past.

Rafa played great for 2 sets when Fog was just ordinary. Once Fog stepped it up, Rafa was not able to handle it. Old Rafa would have never allowed it to go for 3 sets.

Rafa needs to get a good serve and pop in his FH which went AWOL today in the later stages of the match

I used to be a huge Bull-hater, everyone knows this.
 Confused. Thought he was a massive Rafa fanboy
just in looks obviously, has that naked boy obsession
Hitting with heavy topspin takes the most skill and power. Anyone can hit flat and fluke winners.

i gotta say, when i came home with nadal up two sets and 3-1 in the third, i said to myself . . . "i thought fabio would put up more of a fight." never in my wildest dreams did i think he'd take it to five, much less pull it out.

that last set was absolutely insane, though. not just the crazy shot-making, but the ridiculous string of breaks. i was so fascinated as to what would happen next, that i decided not to turn on the laptop to post. it's a shame there weren't more people in the stands to witness the match.

I know. I watched exactly up to that point before turning the TV off. Then I checked scores here after over an hour and thought why does this routine straight sets match thread have so many pages...only to find they were in a fifth ! I regret missing sets 3 and 4. Was Fog's shotmaking in them as good as in the fifth ?

No, but he had his serve. They gave each other the chance to play a match that was almost entirely dictated off the ground, so we purr at the ground exchanges, but their serves were way too big a hole and they gave way for such a match. Federer can not look to be in Slam winning form in a match in a first week match but against Fognini it would be very hard for me to see him losing as his serve would be critical and frustrate Fognini a lot, causing him to play a way less expressive game because suddenly him holding his own serve becomes 100x more important. This is not the sort of tennis that succeeds on the US Open and Wimbledon courts. The first strikes are doubly important there.
