The only interesting match in this tournament apart from a potential Nadal-Nishikori final. Can Fognini threaten the Monte Carlo champion?

Nadal in 3 sets. Fognini playing well and the head to head shows he is big trouble for Rafa when he's playing well. Rafa still doesn't have much of a serve. Fognini feasted on the Rafa first serve last time in Barcelona, so he should put the Rafa serve under a lot of pressure.

Fogal is becoming a classic! The Red Spring of Revenge is chugging along nicely.
Chapter 1: Thiem. Rio revenge
Chapter 2: Wawa. Rome revenge
Chapter 3: Murray. Madrid revenge
And now Fog. Ok, he already did that one but nothing wrong with reruns + even better if it happens at the crime scene.
After that, he'll need to somehow create an opportunity to beat up on Cuevas, that should be easy enough. But of course , the big one, the center piece , the mammoth event will be the one that everyone is waiting for with palpitations, drumroll: Novaaaaaaaak. That one should really happen at RG for maximum dramatic effect. Nobody gets the last word with Nadal on clay or... do they? 6 hour blockbuster final coming right up :D

You may be right, Rafa has been more clutch, so that will be a factor. His defense is better this year and we are starting to see the forhand.improvements.

Rafa will have to pay attention let fog going for broke winners. When he make them in, gives fogs confidence. It would be good for Nadal to mix his shots including some net play.

I'm not really making a very informed decision, so I'll just say Nadal in 3.

I haven't seen Fognini at all this year. I see that he pretty much destroyed his last two opponents... but those opponents aren't really any challenge for him. His other results look pretty questionable. I guess we'll see.

Unless Fognini has a meltdown (which is entirely possible I suppose), I think it'll be a close three-setter.

Nadal needs to keep the pressure on right up until the handshake. Their last few matches I feel like Nadal blinked first and let Fognini back into the match.

The Fog is dangerous for Rafa these days, I'm predicting 3 sets and could go either way though I voted for Rafa cos he's my dude.

Fognini to fog Nadal in two tight sets. Seriously. With the way Nadal has been struggling to hold serve, it's going to be the fifth set of the US Open all over again. Opponents win too many points on his serve for my comfort and confidence.

I'll say Nadal in 3.
It will depend on how well Nadal is serving and if Fognini keeps his composure or implodes mentally.

You should be. This will be a great test of Nadal's form. Will he struggle with Fognini or demote him to pigeon status?
Didn't he shed the wigeon label last season, though? You gotta be a consistent week-in, week-out stooge to embody wigeonhood, no?

I have to go with Rafa in straights and fairly easily. Fog hasn't been playing much and Nadal is playing far better than he was when they met multiple times last year.

Fognini was no match for pre 2014 Nadal. Nadal used to routine him all the time. Last year Nadal offered Fognini too many short balls that had little pace and spin. Fognini was extremely good at punishing those short balls.

If Nadal can routine him like 6-3, 6-2, it would mean he is really back to elite level on clay.

That's my logic too. Last year's battles were still close matches, and Nadal was playing some career-worst tennis. His level is so much better now (though the serve is about the same) that I have trouble seeing this being too competitive. Fognini will hit a couple spectacular shots but will also make some boneheaded decisions and that will be more than enough for Rafa to win.
