2017 is very turbulence year for WTA. Vesnina and Konta are the odd bunch that got lucky imo.

Exactly. People complain that the WTA players trade breaks and can't hold their serve.
We had a match here where both players were aggressive and strong, and yet people still complain. I'm not sure what they want. Perhaps they just want to put others down.

Congrats to both Angie and Bianca. That was an exciting and aggressive final. Hopefully the men's final will be too! I can't wait.

I personally don't complain. WTA is much more entertaining than ATP at the moment, and I don't really watch men's tennis for that reason. But to call someone just after one tournament a star is premature. That's my point. The girl still has to prove she's here to stay.

Mainly their age. Ostapenko, Osaka and Andrescuu were 20 and under when they did it.

Of course she's not a star yet, but a lot of them that comment on you is Canadian. They are longing for a star after disappointment from Bouchard and Raonic.

If you guys have eyes and watched her matches, you will probably agree that she plays like a star. Similar to how Serena played in her youth (in terms of changing directions and power) + finesse/variety....

So, just started watching Bianca since this last tournament, huh?

In Auckland, she got through qualifying and beat first seed Caroline Wozniacki, sixth seed Venus Williams, and third seed Hsieh-wei to reach her first final which she lost to Goerges.

At the Australian Open she again made it through qualifying and to the second round of the main draw.

At Newport Beach (a lower level WTA event) she had direct entry into the main draw and won the event (beating Genie Bouchard along the way) for her first WTA title.

She played for Canada in Fed Cup against Netherlands and won both her matches there.

Next she played in Acapulco and made it to the semi-finals and raised her ranking from 158 at the beginning of the year to #60 so she got herself a wild card into Indian Wells and we all know how amazingly well she did there and is now #24.

She's had an incredible year so far and it's only March. It's not ONLY one tournament she's excelled in and it certainly isn't premature to call her a star, rising and achieving great milestones along the way.

Yastremska is 18, has an equally good year, and has one title more. Is she a star already?

Congrats to Andreescu on winning her 1st Premier Mandatory title at the tender age of 18 (following in Osaka's footsteps from last year). :)

Big ouch for Kerber who has now lost all 5 of her finals in these type of events!:(

As of today she hasn't had an equally good year. She hasn't won any title nearly as prominent as Indian Wells nor has she beaten as many top ranked players. Actually, Yastremska and Andreescu were very similar with their path up the WTA rankings and they were both rising stars. With her win today, Bianca is now a full fledged star.

You sound like her PR agent. Nope. She's not. It takes a bit more to be a star. She'll be one when she'll back it up with more titles. As of today she's just a fearless teen with an impressive game, a will to win and an IW title.

Yes sorry for Kerber, great defender and some point construction but like some authors are saying:

"Kerber can do a lot of things on a tennis court, but she can’t create opportunities for winners the way Andreescu can. "

Bianca said during her press conference that the coach gives her chills with the way he says things.

Interestingly, contrary to the advice of some vocal WTA fans on this forum , Bianca runs around her backhand a lot and it works. Whoever thought that was possible, right?

She's all over the news in Canada so at least in one G7 country shes a star.

I think we can safely call her a Canadian star but not an international star.

She's done something no other Canadian tennis player has ever done. Won a Premier Mandatory/Masters 1000 event. Not Raonic, not Rusedski, not Shapo, not Bouchard, not Carling Bassett, not Nestor. This is a big thing for Canadian Tennis and hopefully just an inkling of the future.

Probably will need to win a couple slams to be an international star although Wozniacki and Halep are stars with only one slam to their name.

More than slams, we will just have to start seeing her go deep in Premier tournaments regularly. This is just the first and as astounding as it is that she ran the table, it's the first time people are even hearing of her name. Takes a lot more to be a star and that's not a knock on her talent or potential.

I just found this out. It's very unfair for other hard-working, struggling Pros who deserve it more based on ranking and career achievements.

Found a write up in lastwordontennis.com about this. Here's an excerpt of Mari's performance this year from the article

"Mari Osaka’s current live ranking is No. 338 in the world. Her career high is only No. 280 in the world. Osaka has played two events this year, losing 6-0 6-0 in the first round of the Newport Challenger this year and losing in straight sets in qualifying for ITF Midland. And yet, she is a wild card into this big event."

It's good to be affiliated with IMG since they own the tournament.

There's a 2018 article on W magazine with the title, "Mari and Naomi Osaka could be the next Venus and Serena Williams" - that's quite a tall order to achieve/match.

IMG obviously can spot good talents. Let's see today whether Mari can perform against another WC - Whitney Osuigwe.
