Have to say that I do like the new blue courts in Doha, perfect in the lead up to the AO.

We got exactly what we wanted - Djokovic is in form like we thought he might be and even better, Stan looks like he might be ready to be a consistent presence at the majors again with this level.

LOL @Meles ....

New year not starting well for NextGen : Khachanov losing to Stan , Tsitsipas losing to unknown journeymen , Thiem losing to doubles specialist, Tiafoe losing back to back and humiliated by Fed.

Guess who is winning the matches - Berdych , Verdasco, Federer and DJokovic

You conveniently forgot to mention Zverev - pretty high profile of Nextgen success in the new year......

Another failure for TT's "Buckaroo Banzai"

Khachanov is a tough opponent and, from the highlights, it doesn't look like he was playing badly. Just couldn't impose himself physically on Wawrinka like he does on some of the other people he plays. With Wawrinka, I feel like you can hit the hardest shot you can, but he can always break the bank with a winner from either the forehand or the backhand side.

I must say Khachanov has been a bit of a disappointment so far. Straight sets loss to Djokovic in Abu Dhabi and straight sets loss to Stan in Doha! Doesn't bode well for his prospects at the AO. I thought he was shaping up to be a real contender. Did he flatter to deceive when he beat Djokovic in the Paris final at the end of last year? :(

I wouldn't read too much into it, especially given that I think it is pretty clear that Stan and Djokovic have higher peaks than Khachanov has had until this point. I'd wait and see how he shapes up in the AO and later in the season. These are two pretty hard opponents to start off with, especially when you're a few months removed from weekly matchplay.

Glad to see Brisbane has finally stolen the limelight from this horror of an event. That being said the draw isn't quite the farce of years past:
1. Djoko has a lot of fresh blood to deal with instead of a bunch of geratrics he's been mopping up for years
2. Hard to complain about Wawrinka v Khachanov first round
3. Bottom half is the usual travesty, but Thiem at 2 has lost to the walking bye Herbert before and Herbert is pursuing singles with renewed vigor. Bendych and Goffin have nice records against Thiem and might be his 3rd and 4th matches if he does not stumble walking over the bye. @stringertom ?
Kiss of death again mentioning Thiem in 3/4R matches there. A check is on its way from Camp Bresnik to you as a down payment on a gag order to NEVER again predict Thiem matches and/or draws.

I’m really happy with Djokovic injecting more pace into the ball these days. He needs to keep this up and get Becker back or some volley specialist on his team.

This aggressive nature is great to see and if Djokovic can capitalize on it by improving his volleys and overheads, we might see a Federer like career for Djokovic past 32. It’s definitely a step in the right direction and it looks like Djokovic is making moves to preserve his longevity

I usually like Jarry as betting-wise, cause I am a sports bettor BUT the things what US commentators are saying atm as potential top-10 career and KAndy-like career, I really dont believe it. I mean of course today Stan is again in another level, and Jarry gets no piece on return when he faces a top player, who maybe isn't YET at his top form (although Stan is playing really good I have to say). For me Jarry's max. is top-25 level. I just dont see him in top-10 or later stages in Slams, when the Next Gen is (finally) stepping up  Although like I said I like him as betting, cause he is usually good for over games even on clay, and can play closes matches even as an underdog.

Not really, DJokovic was just the end of a very impressive run which included destroying Thiem and ZVerev on HC as well in Paris.

Djokovic loss in an exho doesn't matter.

He had a DR of 1.2 while playing bad vs Wawrinka.

Nothing that indicates to me that Paris was a fluke at all.

Joe Kovic is playing at a high level, yet trailing.

WTFsovics' really making this a battle - almost like Novak playing himself out there

Getting tougher to maintain consistently high level day in, day out for anyone. The guys who falter the fewest number of times will be the ones reaping the spoils.

I guess we all have to watch Fucsovic a little more when he isn't playing Djoko or Freddie.

Guess he's playing a fair bit above his means currently. Still he's a very solid player.

Agree. That’s what makes it so incredible in my mind when a player goes on a dominating spree. It’s not just that they are playing well. It’s that they have to keep it up day in and day out and can’t falter.
