lol. Moonball an effective tactics against Townsend. She's hit a short reply that Garbi has followed to net a few times. It's something I wish she'd use more.

Also wish she'd develop a short slice ala Fed to bring people into net. She has such a good lob that it would be very effective I think.

Who do people have making the SF from that bottom quarter of the draw? Not that Angie was likely to make the SF but her loss opens up the draw.

The only players from that quarter of the draw to have made a slam SF at the French Open are Pliskova and Kuznetsova.

I went with a Pliskova Yastremska QF with Karolina making the semi. That Kerber quarter could have almost anyone make it out of there though.

On top of that, who we got making the QF from Angie's part of the draw?

The seeded players in her section:
Suarez Navarro
Mertens
Sevastova

On top of that you've got decent unseeded players including:
Potapova
Vondrousova
Yastremska
Pavlyuchenkova

Pavs and Carla are the only two to have made a QF at the French Open before in that part of the draw.

Yep that section is wide open.

I had Vondrousova getting through but could be anyone.

Putting aside the bigger names like Suarez Navarro, Mertens and Sevastova, you've also got lower ranked players who've achieved something on clay this year.

Zidasnek just made the final in Nurnberg
Astra Sharma made the Bogota final last month
Yastremska as you said with her title in Strasbourg
Vondrousova with the Rome QF and Istanbul final.

Etc.

One to watch.

Garbie gets it done in the 3rd over Townsend.

Faces Larsson next.

Excited for a 3R match between Muguruza and the winner of Venus/Svitolina.

Kuznetsova down a set and break to Kucova. Would make the draw easier for Pliskova who’s at risk of playing the 2009 champ in the 2R.

I don’t think Serena is healthy enough to put together 7 matches in a row. Injuries are a real issue considering her age.

i agree, in an ideal situation she should get through the draw, but idk, plus on clay where it just becomes more of a grind. if im not mistaken she hasn't played any clay or maybe 1 round on rome can't remember, but this is basically the first time she has played since indian wells

I feel this is a tad silly considering she made the final at Wimbledon and the US Open which were 6 matches a piece. And then the Aus Open she won 4 including beating the #1. Unlucky to have rolled that ankle against Pliskova and choke the third set but she’s shown she’s more than fine at slams since her return.

She’s not Federer or Nadal who necessarily need warm up events before slams. She played nothing before Wimbledon last year and breezes through to the final. She played only a handful of matches before the US Open last year includingthat demolition from Konta but Serena then went on to make the US Open final. She brings her A game at the slams.

She doesn’t really have anything to worry about til the 4R against Barty but even then, she beat Ash in Paris last year and that was Serena’s first tournament back! Whereas now she’s had her practice.

Have this weird feeling there could be an upset brewing for Pliskova v Brengle. Hope I’m wrong, Madison did take Karolina to three earlier in the year at the Aus Open before romping home in the next two sets.

I know what u mean though i think that Pliskova got this. Something must be wrong with
Brengles serve looks really weak. She must be recovering from a shoulder injury ?

She withdrew from last FO with an injury too. We will see. I am skeptical.

I agree her draw is pretty merciful.

That got away from Venus fast. She was hitting the ball really well, but Svitolina Ferrer'd her way to the set being too solid. About 5 terrible volleys cost her the set

If only Eli could play well for over 4 matches at these events. It's getting frustrating watching her.

Venus is amazing. First female player I heard of as a kid, and she is still out there, doing alright.

Solid match from svitolina just needs to serve better as the tournament progresses

Don't see that happening to be honest she seems to have totally lost confidence serving. Shame because everything else she does is so good. Never in doubt today but Elina's serve loses close matches. I liked the look of Vondrousova earlier, super young player.

Yup I’ve had my eye on Vondrousova ever since she beat Halep earlier in the year.

I saw Ponchet winning a hardcourt tourney in Portugal last year and was impressed with her play, but mostly with her demeanour on court.
There were about 3 girls there who were possibly more talented than her but she beat them all with smart play and a good mental game.
