Who's gonna win it this year? Defending champion Zverev is out as well as Novak Djokovic. Fortunately, Rafa will greet us with his presence.

If Montreal is anything to go by, guessing the winner is a stab in the dark. With any luck Rafa will be able to get a few matches under his belt as a warm up for the USO but I’m managing expectations with him for this tournament, despite wanting him to win the whole thing.

@BGod might tell you off for not including Kyrgios in your poll lol

I usually only include the top 8 seeds in tournament thread polls.

It's Nadal's for the taking. Alcaraz has lost his aura, and Medvedev...until he can revert to his wild and crazy self will go quietly into the night.

I think Nadal will play a couple of matches and then storm off to the USO. He's not gonna bother with smaller events pre slams anymore.

Kyrgios is currently 4th in USO futures at 8-1. But you don't include him in your poll because, reasons? Unless you know he won't play Cincy entirely.

I usually only include the top 8 seeds in tournament thread polls.

And reasons? You realize that top 8 seeds are not universal for all surfaces, let alone crowds, scheduling, momentum, etc, etc.

It is only advisable to include all top 4 seeds due to how the draws are made but after that one REALLY should look at context less your poll turns out like a riot which in Montreal it certainly did. But whatever.

I tagged you in good humour btw, and in truth you do have a point. However, it is reliant on the OP’s interpretation of who should fill the remaining spots in a poll if you only pick the top 4 automatically. That in itself may result In disagreements.

I don't think the disagreements would be more when given context from previous season performance and current form.

For example Hurkacz has no precedence whatsoever to be included over Kyrgios now.

Well should I make another tournament thread, I’ll bear it in mind (y)

I mean, to be fair, nobody short of Biff and his Sports Almanac could have come up with a solid poll for Montreal. The only names outside of the top 8 that may have reasonably been included were Berrettini and Kyrgios, and they won't be playing in the weekend either.

Potential Felix QF then SF for Nadal.

Dimitrov vs Shapovalov 1R is insane loving it.

Kyrgios should at least make SF.

Kyrgios and Busta should have both been included.

Agree about Kyrgios but Busta... meh! He ran into a good week - certainly not unheard of, but he had given exactly zero signs of being in any sort of top form. Also, had never been past the 2R in this tournament.

Herbie is a former HC 1000 champ and didn’t have the good fortune to have his Wimbledon SF rival withdraw yet shouldn’t be in the poll but NK should because he beat Nishioka in a 250.
Ok, okaaaay.

He last played Canada like 4 years ago. He's made two USO Semis and two Cincy QFs including last year. Still a Top 20 player with big names out. Plus his draw.

Washington was a 500, Kyrgios has been playing a lot of matches and doesn't have best conditioning. Him basically checking out in the 3rd gives me zero confidence in Hurkacz who will now play more with less rest and who's 1 Masters was beating Rublev/Sinner.

Kyrgios' legacy is that of an underperformer but he IS seemingly in his most consistent form meaning only Nadal should be weighted higher right now.

His draw was BRUTAL, by far the worst in the entire field. Never mind how things turned out, before the start his projected path to the final looked like Mount Everest with no oxygen:

Berrettini-Rune-Sinner-Tsitsipas-Alcaraz

Oddsmakers had him comfortable out in the 1R.

Yeah and odds are a reflection of volume betting. Most sports fans let alone gamblers are.....emotional let's say.

Mateo is in joke form, lol at Rune, Sinner is up and down. And sure Tsitsipas and Alcaraz on paper but that's SF-F.

Busta is getting underrated now.

Murray having to play qualies to get in. Ben Shelton I saw play Isner in Atlanta. The kid is the real deal, looking forward to his progress

Btw Kyrgios would be seeded 12th here with his Wimbledon points. Not to even mention Hurkacz or Ruud could realistically skip Cincy in the event of winning Canada.

What about QF? That looks tough against Sinner/FAA in best of 3 fast conditions.
Aren't the court conditions in Cincinnati virtually the same as Flushing Meadows? B5 or B3, if Nadal's playing, he's in it to win it. I'll take my chances on Nadal.

With Busta beating Draper I believe Murray gets SD.
SD? If you mean SE, no, Murray does not qualify for it. A SE is given only when a player was on the entry list for Qualifying but is still active in the main draw from the ongoing tournament. All 4 Montreal SFists are DE to Cincinnati and 7 of 8 QFists are in. Draper, who had to qualify in Montreal, was not on the entry list,so there will be no SE. When this happens the TD can award a late additional WC to fill the spot.

I’m not sure if a qualifier that has drawn his matchup already can be elevated with that extra WC. Perhaps Murray moves into MD that way.

Cincinnati is usually faster.
Nadal likes fast hardcourts, because it gets him free points on serve.
The courts he doesn't like are low-bouncing :happydevil:
And he probably would have won Cincy more often, if he played it more often.

I wonder why as they both use Laykold. Different balls? Atmospheric conditions?
Laykold, just like Plexipave, Decoturf and GreenSet, can be slowed down by adding more sand to the top layer, making it grittier. For an extreme example, look at the last decade or so on Plexipave at Indian Wells. The balls are changed at the same 7/9 games but are ridiculously worn out a couple of games before changing.
