Norrie moves to a new career high #9 in the world. I would not have predicted it earlier on in his career, good for him. Win over Coric tomorrow and he'd move to #8.

In fairness to Borna, he was taking names when Norrie was still in school.
I actually like the SF lineup. Alcaraz would have been the hotter ticket, but Cam is a solid player. And, happy to see Borna back in the thick of things.

IMO, Med is indeed a BS Russian. He had to basically emigrate from Russia in all ways but formally giving up his citizenship. He then chose to move with his parents to try a new life in France in order to have a better chance to succeed. Meddle then hired a French coach and signed to play in French clothing and with French equipment. Now he lives next door to France in M-C and is decidedly neutral in support or denouncement of the despot ruler of the homeland that he rarely visits. His strongest link to Russia is his wife Daria, who remained there to finish university before joining Daniil in France to wed in 2018.

Meddle is more French than Russian and might succeed even more if he embraced his reality, just like Beckett became a great writer when he embraced his French milieu and stopped writing in English.
If he gets funds from the Russian Tennis Federation that could be another link.

Arnold Schwarzenegger did. Came to the US at 21. Became the Governor of California for 8 years. Made a few movies I hear.

Schwarzenegger did it for opportunistic reasons. Also he's neither southern nor eastern european. As I said "anglosaxons" are different from other europeans, did founded the US afterall.

The same federation that so many have deserted in favor of Kazakhstan, who actually support their recruits financially? Med left to try France because of the home federation lack of support.

Bur Medvedev plays for them and he doesn't have to if there is no funding. I am not sure what the exact situation is, but it may well be that they support some but refuse others because they think they have enough, so players move to other countries that lack their own and would support them. Tennis players typically relocate to Monaco because of zero income tax.

If it happens, it happens. It'll sting, but Stef is a good player. Definitely wouldn't put it past him. Medly needs this one if he wants to hang on to #1, though.

It was more a comment on the state of Stef's game. Med still has a commanding lead in the h2h for a reason.

WOAT comment. You're doing a good job of supporting the stereotypes about the American ignorance/arrogance.

I'd love to see that match. Coric leads the H2H against Medvedev 4-2. However the last match was played in 2019 with Medvedev winning in straights.
Three years is a long time. And tennis is never predictable. But let’s see if they get there. If they do, then I lean more towards Coric than Daniil.

That's why I wanna see it. Coric's 4 wins came all before 2019. However pre 2019 Daniil is not the same as post 2019 Daniil, so I'm curious what a potential final would look like now

I’m ignorant? For example, I’ve been aware of the century or more long history of affinity for the Côte d’Azur by emigrant Russians for most of my adult life. I even marveled at the beauty of the Cathedrale Saint-Nicolas de Nice when I first saw it in person nearly 50 years ago.

There’s nothing wrong with picking a better place to live out a career and I never said it’s wrong for Med to be the latest example. Just accept and embrace the cradle of his own development as a crucial ingredient in his development. Doing that would allow a bit more balance to be achieved.

You’re the one that’s ignorant and guilty of leaning on a faulty crutch of stereotypes. It used to be The Ugly American syndrome. Glad to see we’re all now just arrogant on top of being ignorant, pal. (n)

Moving to another town for better opportunity doesn't invite disowning the place you grew up in.

And nobody suggested he disown his heritage but even a blind squirrel would get the acorn that says, “Daniil, you’re as much French as you are Russian now that you’ve lived a fraction less than half your life and all your early adult life in your adopted country, where you honed your professional skills. It’s OK to have one root in Russia and a second root here.”

Did the affluent Russian emigres of the very early 20th century abandon their heritage and build a Gothic French cathedral? No, they stayed Orthodox and the architecture reflects it, complete with onion domes on several spires. It’s an absolutely stunning building. Visit it sometime if you get the chance.

Ugh... there we go again. Great idea by Gaudenzi to turn Rome, Cincy and Canada into 96-player draws: a gazillion matches and not a single roof... that should be fun!

I know there is rain in the forecast - any word on whether the remaining matches might start on time?
