The first semi-final of an ATP 500 tournament at Hamburg, Germany (clay). Two of the higher-ranked players for this tournament will face off against each other here. To have more insights on this ATP Nikoloz Basilashvili vs Alexander Zverev match please check out the preview below.

Nikoloz Basilashvili
16th ranked, 27 years old, Georgian stomped Jeremy Chardy at the quarter-final in straight sets (6-2; 6-3). It seemed like everything was working for Basilashvili in that match while Chardy couldn’t find his rhythm. This tournament has shown how well Basilashvili has recovered after some struggles lately and there is a good reason for that. Nikoloz is a defending champion this year as he’s won the title in 2018. Of course, last year’s opposition were strong as well, but this time he’s facing a Top 5 player who is playing at home court and the Georgian won’t be a favorite tomorrow for sure. However, Zverev has shown a lot of weak points today. So if Basilashvili manages to capitalize on them tomorrow he might really be able to reach the final once again.

Alexander Zverev
Still one of the youngest players on tour, only 22 years old and already 5th in the world, Alexander Zverev hadn’t had an easy way into the semi-final. After defeating N. Jarry and F. Delbonis in straight sets in first two rounds, he actually were really close to being eliminated against F. Krajinovic today. Zverev was down 5-3 in 2nd set after he lost the first one, but Krajinovic couldn’t capitalize and lost the set 5-7. Zverev didn’t leave any hopes for the Serbian in 3rd set and closed the match by winning the 3rd set 6-2. Even though he managed to come-back and win the match, his current form is still raising a lot of questions. It’s hard to tell if it’s enough to beat Basilashvili tomorrow, but Zverev has definitely shown better performance in order to win the title.

Rooting hard for Sasha! :) Hoping for him and Pablo in the final! :)

Is Bailashvili the one who never smiles when he wins?

Zverev had a game point on his serve, and then DF'd with two unforced errors. He's going to get straight-setted as the home favorite.

Someone needs to work with Zverev's forehand. It is really bad. Just zero pop. It looks like he doesn't accelerate into the ball... rather he just sort of pushes it. And it is super loopy.

Basilashvili at 40-15 had 2 great chances to finish the game and made stupid unforced errors, to then get broken again :-D

Choking big time because Zverev is yet again, playing horrible.

Very pessimistic playing style by Zverev. He obviously doesn't think he can win the match, other than by Bashiavelli losing it through errors.

Is Bash having a meltdown, he can't even put one single first serve in anymore?

He plays every match in this style. That’s why he can lose to anyone on any day. And I really mean it literally: Any ATP player is potentially capable of beating Zverev if he doesn’t lose it himself. That trend started in 2019 and is the reason why Zverev can never be #1, no matter how weak an era might become.

Good Grief...the BIG 3 have nothing to worry about for a long time...this is brutal  Neither of these two dum-dums want to win! Sheesh :-D:-D

I don't know how Bash managed to turn that tiebreak around because he was looking awful up to 2-5.

But the match was pretty low quality and I think the winner of the other semifinal will win the final.

Thiem secures 4 seed at the Real Slam with this Zedrot failure. Z rolling in the 2nd serves for 40% won.:-D

Zedrot's pushery disposed of; well done Basha.:D
Are you already a full member of ABZ or do we still have to wait a bit longer? :p

In all seriousness: How many of those complete up-and-down matches did Zverev have this year? I cannot count it anymore. But usually on clay though, because on other surfaces he loses easily. ;)

This was really quite the match. Zverev showed all his toughness, but still plagued by a horror of a 2nd serve game. Basilashvilli was scintilating including nearly twice the percentage of 2nd serve points won. Quite the battle.:p

He's actually playing extremely well save the 2nd serve game. This is a guy who I called Zedbot early on back in 2017 because he was so effective behind his 2nd serve. Its just an incredible fail by this team that they've let him revert to pushery and rolling in 2nd serves where he invariably goes down in a grueling matter. If he started holding serve reliably the pressure on his opponents on their own serve game would tip things his way and wow was he close to so many breaks in this match.:-D Zverev used to dominate with depth and he's really mush more pushy which may be working on return games but is disastrous on serve especially at slams.

I like Zverev, but very happy to have Thiem in the top 4 at his expense.;)
