I've got to watch a bit of Rafa versus Sock, but Thiem at Rome has been slacking off. The Destroyer was merciful today in a quick three set match so some hope that Thiem will have a full enough gas tank. This seems more likely to be even more of a grindathon with both players more troubled on serve. Thiem is very lucky to have Rafa in QF rather than another final where the mileage on Thiem too much of a liability like in Barcelona.

Nadal 4 and 3 in two respectable, uneventful sets.

That's incorrect. Madrid conditions are the worst (relatively speaking) for Nadal. He has five Madrid titles and seven Rome titles.

Nadal isn't going to take Thiem lightly. Their Madrid finals match was very competitive. Especially that first set tiebreaker. Nadal was forced to play his hardest that day. Thiem still has 7 years advantage over Nadal, age-wise. This is the peak of Nadal whereas Thiem still has more upside and can get better and stronger.
