Wasn't his toughest loss Wimby 08?

Or was it Wimby 14? Or 15?

Or USO 15?

I think Wimbledon 08 was an extraordinary match, but it was when Nadal then took him out on a hard court that it looked like an established pattern across the surfaces rather than a single extraordinary effort. The others you mention I'm sure hurt, but they are very much later in his career, when you wouldn't expect the same level, his tennis afterlife if you will. It's Federer who has paved the way for the quality and longevity of Nadal and Djokovic, at those tournaments he was doing something unprecedented by continuing to get so far.

I don't see how you can call yourself the grass GOAT when you have lost three finals to one of your rivals. Especially not when blowing championship points. Especially when losing one in three tiebreaks.

Federer has certainly won more Wimbledons (at least so far), but it seems a bit strange to say he's the grass GOAT when he can't beat one of his rivals. It kind of contradicts the whole "GOAT" thing.

Djokovic is not one of the most conventional grasscourters you have seen but he has 5 Wimbledon trophies and 3 of those against Federer.

Get out of here man. Hes a 20 slam 310 weeks at #1 GOAT thats in a major final at the age of 37 competing at the highest level. They both had moments of mental wavering. But they both were tremendous as well. He came down 4-2 down in the 5th. Seriously. All you fake Fed fans are frickin annoying.

You're the fake fan. A real Federer fan knows that he's still the better grass court player than Djokovic, and yet again lost a match he should've won. Federer should've won in 2014, didn't show up in 2015, and choked the match away (broken when serving out the match after reaching 40-15!!) in 2019.

The guy has won 20 slams but he has had so many heartbreaking matches it’s unreal.

He's the man, he's the standard. Honestly, with this late career resurgence it's not going a million miles too far to say he IS tennis now. What happens when he goes? What's the point for Nadal and Djokovic any more? Fed's the guy.

On the one hand I’m amazed at the level of tennis Fed has managed to play at his age, nearly beating his two biggest much younger rivals back to back to win the world’s biggest tournament. On the other I’m still pissed he didn’t win that third set when Djokovic was playing at like 50% of his top level. Djoker woke up as the match wore on, so no shame in how the last two sets unfolded but the third set is where Fed really should have taken a commanding lead. Though losing it from 40-15 up is pretty gutting as well.

In the 5th set at the end, all Roger was doing was hitting inside out forehand. Wasn't going for DTL anymore

I suppose my point is that every loss is billed as the "toughest loss ever" around these parts. He'll get over this loss the same way he got over his losses in 08, 09, 11, 14, 15, etc.

Wow, Djokovic seems very somber in his interview. Especially talking about how his being a player depends on support from his wife and family and finding a balance.

Something definitely isn't right at home. And he still won this match. I just realized... his wife wasn't in his box, either. That's probably a part of why he was so glum during the match, too.
Stop spewing nonsense. No need for this. He was calm because he realizes the magnitude of what he just accomplished, where, and against whom.

LMAO<,,,,,,, Those Royalties duke and dutchess look so disappointed. when Novak got up there,,,, it looked like they really didn't even want to talk to him.........................
Rekt. What a shame those poor diddums have to do something that makes them uncomfortable for five minutes? I hope Djoker slaps them on the back like rugby teammates

I'm not a federer fan. I'm a djokovic fan. But i admire and respect the guy. You of many toxic fed fans bring up the most irrelevant and distasteful critiques after an epic match. Get a grip. Appreciate greatness and appreciate your supposed favorite player. The dudes verging on 38 and pushed djoko to the longest wimbledon final in HISTORY!!!!!! And you had nothing but BS to spew. Seriously?

Disagree. That exactly what you say negates Federer being the best.

The 2009 match against Roddick was definitely a complete reversal foreshadow of this match.

In 2009, Federer supposedly "robbed" Roddick of his legacy. Where Roddick's fans said Roddick played the better match. And now exactly 10 years later, exactly the same event, exactly in five sets. Federer fanboys are saying exactly the same thing that Roddick fans were saying back then.

Irony can be so ironic.

Really? Lol. 40-15. All the guy needs to do is put in a good first serve and he can’t do that. How do you lose 4 straight points? Federer must be asking himself that question right now.

Yeah I mean you can't make every serve. He got a weak approach on that break point and didn't do anything with it. Take the pressure out of the equation and he probably wins the point in that situation 19/20 times.

lmao according Tennis lost in a 5 set wimbledon final 5 hour match (longest wimbledon final ever) which included saved championship points that haven't happened in 71 years. Tennis is winning. And it'll win at a higher level once toxic fans like yourself stop watching the sport.

Baseliner wins by tiebreaks over 5 sets in the longest wimbledon ever on courts intentionally slowed. Yep that's what grass court tennis is supposed to be.

I hope both guys will make it again next year and go for an even longer 5 setter. Ole!
Djoko has now been in my 2 fav finals ever: AO 2012 and this W. Epic GOATness

It's just a function of how many opportunities he creates for himself every year, tournament, and match. Nobody would be able to take them all.

There's no such thing as being particularly unlucky and so there's no use moping. Federer has had enough days in the sun for a lifetime. Both figuratively and literally.

Every player has their down moments. I've seen Nadal and djokovic "lose" when they should've won. But these players are facing All time Greats. You probably thought Federer wasn't going to win the Aussie against nadal huh? Or win it b2b years? Or win a frickin 8th wimbledon!?!?! You know what i'm impressed about? The fact that a bunch of posters here, including plenty of Fed fans, looked at the h2h with nadal and Fed and saw the lopsidedness that could be used against his greatness... you know what he did? HE not only lessened the gap with the H2H he beat Nadal at the Aussie in a GS Final (when everyone thought he was not going to win) and pre the semi finals everyone thought nadal was going to win as well!!! Yet he lost!!! In convincing fashion. Feds a Mental Giant. Don't get it twisted.

Well, I could see why this one is a cut above. Federer, at 40-15 on his own serve at Wimbledon, surely closes out the game <98% of the time. Recency bias is rampant around these parts but I think this truly was the toughest loss of his career by far lol, with nary a close second in sight. Imagine being <98% likely to win a match, right at the precipice of winning, and then you blow it, then give yourself multiple opportunities to win and then squander those too, while knowing you won both of your sets decisively while losing all 3 in nail-biting fashion.

Like cmon lmao tbh downplaying this loss is like the polar opposite of recency bias.

You know, im fine with either of these two winning but damn. Near the end I just knew I’d be gutted for whoever lost.

Man this stings....But credit where its due, Djokovic is a mental giant and gutted out the win. What a match though...Usurps the one from 2008 in my honest opinion...Not sure how Federer is going to come out of this.....Congratulations to Novak and all his fans....
Tough luck fellow Federer fans....I am hoping this doesn't crush him mentally and he comes back strong for the USO.....Would be nice to see him compete at the highest level....

Dear God, what a match!
Haven't watch last set, couldn't stand pressure...

Don't want to congrats Novak but Roger, he was unbelievable, real hero of tennis...

Big congrats to all his fans, be strong in this hard time, I was on edge of breakdown in some moments so can understand your feelings... and in few days we can continue our forum wars. Be proud on Fed, he is really something special... (y)

For real though I think the reason Federer lost was because he didn't have any late match snacks. I saw Djokovic drink a little coca cola and eat some chocolate. Caffeine is a good choice when you can barely move your legs.

Amidst all the celebrations, if someone finds a link to this match (not just the highlights) could they please give it to me? I missed so much in the final set due to switching streams and not watching due to stress

Federer won basically every stat but it didn’t matter. Ouch.

This is by far the WORST defeat of Federer in his career. He won the match basically but lost the match.......... This isnt' supposed to happen to the GOAT. This could be all over for Federer. this may have been the last chance to win another major...... Most likely................. Have a Good Retirement Roger..........

This is the first time I stopped watching a match because could not take pressure any more. I don't know what happened after Fed got broken having mps. But it looks like from comments I missed a lot drama because they exchanged breaks of serve again. Federer fought till the end but can't appreciate him for that this time as he was better player throughout the match, won 14 more points - should have closed it four sets or in fifth set at 8-7. There is no explanation for this loss unless the obvious mental block and choke (because of it). Very disappointed. It would have been better had he lost 6-2 in fifth.

Cringe. It's just a game, chill. He loses some matches, that's the nature of life.
