The "What's Wrong With Her?" Thread

In general. Even their slam winners have their frequent moments of being headcases.

Well if you're talking about someone who should have a GS and didn't because of choking issues: Safina Dementieva and Petrova.

If you're talking about someone I once had high hopes and possible threat but because of pressure that's all thrown in the water because of her recent suckage: Chavektadze and Kirilenko.

If you're talking about someone despite winning a GS has had many chokes in GS or non GS events: Kuznetsova.

Kvitova is back to her wacky ways. Went from defending champion at Hobart to losing in the third round.... QUALIES!

Well, Larcher De Brito got KO'd in AO qualifying. Your ears won't be horrified as much at this major.

Radwanska blew a 5-0 lead against Safina. That so definitely qualifies for this list.

Safina is Dementieva's b1tch. She's lost her last 4 encounters to her.

Dementieva can kick the crap out of Serena in tier 1-3 events, but will ALWAYS lose to her in majors. Dementieva just stomped Serena at Sydney 6-3 6-2. Congrats Lena, but I will not put any expectations on you for AO because you will always find ways to disappoint.

Dementieva when on can beat most anybody outside the majors with the possible exceptions of Venus and the Belgians. At the majors she puts so much pressure on herself to win because deep down I think she knows she should have one. Lately it seems like everytime she gets in a good position (AO last year, US Open in 2008, US Open in 2005 just as examples) she remembers what happened in 2004 and implodes. And considering where she got placed at this years Australian, even if she beats Henin in the 2nd round she could still get clobbered relatively early if not by Kim in the QF's. Dementieva seriously needs a Grand Slam Shrink, She right now is the best talent wise on tour to not have a slam, but her mindset stinks.

She should have won the French in 2004. Myskina didn't do much of anything to win that. Was favored to win the USO that year against Kuznetsova but her inner demons came out in full force that day (Kuzzy was spraying UEs all day and still won in straights).

Her, Safina, and Petrova have a way with flaming out in slams. Dementieva chokes in slam semis while Safina chokes in finals the way GWB does with pretzels. Part of me really wants Dementieva to win one, but she couldn't fix her fatal flaws in her prime years. Now she's fighting time, her head, and younger competitors.

She just smoked Azarenka, who's supposed to be one of those younger competitiors. So who else is the younger competition that will step up and knock Dementieva so far down?

Last year Wimbledon was probably the best she's played in a big match. 9/10 times she wins that one, but Serena just stepped up when it was necessary.

I still think she can win one; the field still is by and large wide open, she's proven she can beat Serena in big events, it's only a matter of time until she does it in a slam.

Dementieva is bound to have problems with girls that don't give her much pace such Wozniacki and Radwanska while we saw her lose to Oudin at the USO. I think she'll beat Henin assuming they meet in Rd. 2 at the AO, but she'll need a few upsets in the making for her to be in position to win this or any other major for that matter. I question her hunger for a slam since she seems content with the gold medal. All I can say with her is that you're better off hoping for the best, but expecting something less.

First WWWH thread report. Sharapova out already. Plenty of DFs, plenty of UEs.

Wickmayer hits 27 Winners to 80 UEs, yet somehow still wins vs Dhulgeru.

A Chak looks like she's on the way to an upset, up a break in the 3rd vs Penneta...then loses 6 games in a row.

And Day One isn't even over. :D

Who the hell thought it would be fashionable for Sharapova to wear this outfit?

I can see why Kudryavtseva was motivated to beating her at Wimby 2008...

Dementieva needs to upset Henin first before we can even talk about her winning the major - and its only the second round and there is a long way to go

in the first place who expected her to wear this for only one match? if she is not playing doubles then she would have lasted only 3 hours in the whole of AO2010 tournament

Nike certainly didnt expected this i guess

Sharapova went out early the last two slams, so I doubt Nike was counting on her making a really deep run. Then again, one can hope. I'd be shocked if I see any girls toting that outfit. Looks like she emerged from a rain forest.

^^^She did wear a custom outfit...that was it. Her outfits have been nothing short of hideous lately.

Nike has less to do with it than Sharapova herself.

I love the dress. Love love love it. No, I would never buy it, as I don't have anywhere to wear it except my bedroom. But I thought it was lovely.

Maria's tennis was not lovely. Sharapova has not grown as a player since the day she made it to the top. She should ask Wozniacki to give her some pointers on variety.

I wonder, do you think her dad should manage her again? Since Yuri stopped coming, Maria has stopped growing.

Was that her old service motion last night, or the newer abbreviated one?

Well, from the preview Wozniacki's dress looks better than Sharapova's.

Watching Sharapova vs Kirilenko today was like a battle between Nike and Adidas. Nike must be regretting the deal they signed with Sharapova few days ago now...In fact Sharapova's dress looks decent,I would remove the outer layer of translucent clothing on her dress if i could.

WWWH day 2 report

-#18 seed Razzano out 1R to Russian Makarova in straights.

-#23 seed Cibulkova saves multiple MPs in the 2nd set vs Vania King, wins the set in a TB, goes up a break in the 3rd; then loses the match 7-5 in the 3rd.

-Karantancheva came back from down 6-1, 5-1 to Tansugarn to get it to a TB, only to get bagled in the breaker.

I've cut Cibulkova slack in the past, but Vania King is someone she should beat in straights.

Vandeweghe lost 6.0 6.1 and she was the American WC recipient?

Kanepi wins a match!?!?

Something tells me round 2 will be quite a WWWH fest

Why are you surprised? Cibulkova hasn't done much since last year's FO, and Vania King is a solid player. Kanepi has doled out her share of upsets in the past as well.

Sometimes it appears as if you guys forget that these women are actually really awesome tennis players.

Don't forget Cornet, who lost to Schiavone 6-0 5-7 0-6!! I thought she was on her way back up in 2010, but actually she's only going deeper down...

Cibukova made the QF of both warmup tourneys and beat Kuznetsova in Sydney. So yes this is a surprising result for her to go out to King, who's nothing special, especially after having the momentum in the 3rd.

Oudin lost to YARBB Kudryavtseva. Maybe Melanie wore something Alla didn't like... lol

In any event, this Russian didn't fall victim to the Russian-slayer.

Cornet is following the steps of Chakvetadze and Vaidisova....

Cornet didnt even achieve enough to start following the footsteps of Chakvetadze and Vaidisova, at least both of them reaches the semis of grand slams and won a number of tournaments

Vesnina, what's wrong with you? Everytime you get a chance to prove you're a top 20 player, you pull up an 0 fer. And this time vs Garbin??? If you weren't the prettiest of the Russian headcase blondes, I'd find a way to get mad at you....

Baltacha has 3 MP vs K Bond.....
2 MP.... victory!

Yet another upset. K Bondarenko might just be a one event wonder?

Meanwhile Kutuzova blows a 4-1 lead in the 3rd to lose 7-5 to Hantuchova.... The choking continues on the WTA...

Rather than wait for JBF1, here it is:
  • McHale d. Vaidisova at Lutz RD1 6.4 6.2
  • Dulko beats Ivanovic as they both perfected the art of being as error-prone as possible.
  • Szavay failed to convert 2 MPs in route to losing to Li. Her brain was in the gutter in set 3.

Wow Vaidisova is losing easily to top ranked junior players now lol.
Ivanovic is going deep into the pits of hell. She will be unseeded by RG, mark my words.
Szavay could not beat one of the biggest brainless bashers. Absolutely pathetic.

ROFLMAO @ Jankovic losing to her lapdog. Wasn't even close. At this rate I seriously doubt Jankovic will ever reach another slam final.

Both Serbs are so down the rut, it's not even funny anymore.

Safina's route to the SF is nothing but a joke.

But in the end, it's gonna bite her ass once she reaches a credible opponent.

Russia is forever the motherland of headcases. Seriously, is there ANY Russian girl that actually knows what to do in big moments? Sharapova once knew, but lately she's no different. Russia is better off trying to make the Kremlin Cup the 5th slam because they just fold in slams unless it's a Russian vs Russian final.

I think the problem is that the Russian women are, with no exceptions, mindless baseline bashers. This works very well for a set or two. But against players with more variety, they are vulnerable.

Take Kleybanova. Hening could hit a biting slice to her FH, and she couldn't do a thing about it. Did she hit one -- even one -- drop shot off of that ball? Nope, all she could do is try to crush it, right into the net. And then Henin finishes her off by following her return to net, something Kleybanova and other MBBs would never even think to do.

I think maybe I will stop watching the first week of a slam and start watching during the second. Let all the MBBs get cleared out in the first week so the real tennis can begin.

Kirilenko had 5 match points and couldn't seal the deal vs Vinci. Even the commentator is calling her a choker. Okay so she closes it on her 7th MP. Still that's a bit nutty. But then again she plays for Russia... how fitting.

was it "woman problems" again???

man, i still giggle when i think of her post wimbledon loss to oudin. had to be one of the funniest things ever said at a press conference!

seriously, i was really hoping that she'd show up in form with a stronger serve and make it at least to the second week, but noooooo, that's apparently asking too much!!!!!

my wife needs a new fav desperately!!!! she's in a horrible mood everytime jj loses and it's having a negative effect on my life!!!!!

Yeah, I have been pulling for Jankovic since 2006. But since the start 09 things just got bad. She is a totally different player really. And the main difference is her attitude. She used to be very charismatic and seemed to have fun out there, which I feel made her play better. Now she seems really arrogant and bored out in matches, and interviews. I think the #1 ranking really messed her up. Looks like I might have to find a new player to root for as well.

Whatever you have to do, take Petrova off the list temporarily. She just handed Clijsters a bagel and breadstick. Best match possibly of her career.
