Mostly Fed fans overrating Nadal's chances in this thread. Delpotro is 5-8 against Nadal!
That's a very impressive record, and with the way he's been crushing his serve and forehand and the amazing crowd support he has, he definitely has a very good chance to beat Nadal come Friday.

how many times Delpo has defeated Nadal since switching to single hander?

I was a bit surprised by this result actually, great that Del Potro has reached the semis. I think he has a good chance to win the title now but hold need to avoid exposing his backhand against Nadal.

If Rafa brings his best he will have the edge imo. He can keep the ball in play until JMDP makes a mistake or he could get him cornered on the backhand side to open up the court. Still Delpo backhand has been steady in the past two matches and we all know about the other wing. i think this is going to be a nail biting contest .
I sure hope the winner of this match goes on to lift the trophy.
Vamos!

I mean if PCB/Kevin Anderson beat Delpo/Nadal I will be convinced this was the most troll tournament of all time.

I'm dreading that outcome too, i want a great semi final but i also don't want these two to destroy each other to the extent that neither will have anything left in the tank for the final.
I have a tad bit more confidence in Rafa than Delpo in such scenario though, guy is such a fighter. As for Delpo , i don't want to see another Olympics 2016 kinda final, lol.

I expect an Olympics kind of final vs Rafa tbh (for Delpo)

You have to give some credit to Andy, he was on fire those 2 days against Nadal. His backhand was unbelievable. Also he was on fire with his first serve.

@Mainad I don't know what you think but for me that was one of the best matches of his career.
Oh, I do give credit to Andy and to Delpo in '09 and to Djokovic in both '10 and '11. My comments are in rebuttal to Nadal's snarky putdown of Rublev's claim of "nothing to lose," which was spot on. The kid was playing with house money all the way from his unexpected win in 2R vs Dimitrov. No need for Nadal to go off on him with his chiding "you're remembered for your wins" comment. Totally classless.

Fluctuated a good bit. Delpo got a pretty loud cheer for winning the 3rd set though. I think the crowd just assumed Federer would push it to 5.

ahh okay seems nyc, understandably so, definitely like del potro. i wonder how it will be with nadal? i think nyc is a bit more pro fed in general but they seem to like nadal as well. you mentioned olympic like, maybe it will work in favor of del potro like it did last year

I think nadal can smell it but he can't taste it yet. I think he might be nervous so it could be tough but winning the us open after some dissapointments would be the icing on the cake. He wouldn't look back at the dissapointments and just look foward. I thought the guy would never win anything besides RG and now he could win his 3rd us open.

"might be nervous"?
Rafa is always nervous.
That is the source of his power and clutchiness.

I won't be surprised if Delpo wins, but I think Rafa will prevail. Should be an interesting match. Despite having no real backhand, and having the the flu, or whatever it was, Delpo has managed to get it done, and that's impressive. Amazing stuff!

Del Potro is definitely playing inspired tennis right now. And adding to that, the amount of confidence he's feeling after having beaten both Thiem and Federer must be through the roof. It's going to take a special effort for anyone to beat him here on this surface. He's blasting the fuzz off the ball and he's fully dialed in. Should be fun on Friday.

Delpo's forehand is just amazing. When it's firing, it's just as good as any other all time great, when they're peaking. Arguably better. It's probably the most consistently big that the game has seen (maybe excluding Gonzo, though he used to be more first strike with the forehand, when it was at it's biggest. Pre 05 IMO). Ridiculous depth to it, very difficult shot to counter. Fed was obviously rattled by that cannon.

No shame in that, it's natural. I mean I knew Federer was a big favorite in all of his Wimbledon matches, and yet I was scared for all of them, especially in the latter stages. It's just natural. That said, it's really really hard for me to see Rafa letting this slip. Not only do I think he will capture #16, but I think he will do it without much drama, maybe dropping a set or two en route to the victory. I think Juan will make Nadal fans squirm a bit throughout the match but man.. I just don't see it for 3 whole sets. Maybe if he wins the first set and quickly snowballs it, but it's much more likely Nadal is the one doing that.
All I remember is 2, 2 and 2. Granted it was a long time ago and Nadal had a torn muscle in his stomach but it was a beat down. Nadal isn't as good at returning big servers as Fed is either.

LOL what a hater. I guarantee Nadal didn't go off on the kid. He wouldn't go off on anyone especially someone who grew up idolizing him.

Yesterday you said that Thiem is a mug for going to Del Po's forehand, Roger wont do the same mistake !
Maybe .. just maybe it is not that easy to avoid Del Potro's forehand
Nadal is a southpaw. If he is not able to abuse Del Potro's backhand, then no one can.

Can't really see Delpo winning this. Yeah he served and hit really well against Roger, but let's get real Roger blew so many easy balls on critical points. That tiebreaker??? I mean LOL. Guy has 3 sets points can't get one good serve in. Then next set serves 4 consecutive near aces. I mean, you can't make this stuff up. So Delpo won, credit, but Roger was just awful. Nadal should take it 3 or 4.
Selective memory. Did not Del Potro have 1 or 2 opportunities to get the double break in the 3rd set? If he converted, the set was over already.

Can we bring in the world's greatest wrist surgeon for an amergency operation to get Delpo's wrists to their 2009 level?

Witch doctor? Pepe Imaz? Anything?

We need Delpo's old wrists back if we want him to SAVE TENNIS!

Can't recall any Rafa fan showing these antics when Fed was playing Berdych and then Cilic at Wimby. You either:
-shut up and ignore it
-respond like a true tennisfan and don't say stupid **** like DELPO TO SAVE TENNIS
-complain about the draw

Man up! If Rafa is the best of these 128 players that participated, deal with it!

I honestly don't mind whoever wins this one, both deserve it. I will say Nadal is the fav, and Del Potro has had the much tougher draw for him, with Thiem and Federer, but count out the big man at your own peril.

Nadal to win this match and then win his third USO title on Sunday. :)

I get so sick of these kind of Fed fans who just want Nadal to lose at all costs to "save tennis". WTF is that? It's a sport and can be won many different ways. Some basketball, baseball and football teams win with great defense and some win with great offense and others a combination. Why can tennis only be won by Fed type tennis? **** gets old fast.

You shouldn't respond to such posts imo.

I don't get all the haters and posts like yours are refreshing. Nadal has busted his ass to get back to where he is much like fed has done. But Nadal needs to lose to "save tennis". SMH

Nadal was born to be a champion, the guy was pure pedigree from a young age, beating French Open champions in his diapers. He is one of the reasons why tennis has managed to remain popular for this past 12 years. If he is without a doubt the second most popular player on the tour, then it is obvious if anyone is saving tennis, it's him.

And people need to understand, it is just a tennis match. Does it change the way you live your life? Does it change the way you wake up and do all the things that you normally do?

When Djokovic was winning, I would get up, clean up, get dressed, have breakfast and go to work. When Djokovic was losing or not playing, I would get up, clean up, get dressed, have breakfast and go to work. I know others here STILL continue with their lives as normal, but people just want to have all this negative energy built up inside, about something that is meant to be sporting, and entertaining, and that should really have zero impact on them. Oh well....

I went with Nadal in four but truthfully, I wouldn't be surprised by much. Nadal will probably exploit the DelPotro backhand and won't make the critical mistakes.

7-5 6-3 4-6 6-2.

People nowadays have it easy in life and take everything for granted. Unfortunately, there is almost no reason for some to not be lazy and find something to complain about.

I think most folks grow out of that petty mentality in their late teens. The realization to slowly stop associating trivial and largely inconsequential events (in the grand scheme of things) that are out of the person's control with happiness eventually sinks in.

Watch his presser, then deny he took him down. Go ahead, I dare you. Even unbiased commentators smoked him for his churlishness.

What a blind fanboy.

Delpo's backhand is truly abysmal right now. Everywhere else he's a horrible matchup for Rafa but that one weakness is something Rafa is going to be ruthless in exploiting, unlike Fed.

Delpo beat Nadal with that same backhand at the Olympics last year. We'll see...

Btw, Delpo in 5 :)

Omfg, I can't even describe how disappointed I am. For the sixth time we are 1 match away from Fedal at USO and again it doesn't happen.
As for the match I have no idea. That 6-2 6-2 6-2 rape in 2009 isn't that easy to forget. But Del Potro declined a lot since then. I didn't expect him to beat Federer at all, this is a shocking result. By logic Nadal SHOULD beat him, but who knows what Del Potro will do now. He managed to beat the player of the year after all.

2 slams for Federer, 1 for Nadal and 1 for Del Potro sounds just like 2009. I hope it will not happen though.

Rafa hadn't hit 1 practice serve since he withdrew from RG until he got to Rio. And his wrist was still hurt. As a Rafa fan I have to hope his improved serve and wrist will let him play better and win. I want Rafa to win but won't be upset with anyone who wins it now.
