World number 1 Rafael Nadal takes on Diego Schwartzman tomorrow in the round of 16. Rafael Nadal leads the H2H 4-0, with one match played on clay. If Rafael Nadal wins in two sets, he breaks the record of most consecutive sets won on one surface. (John McEnroe currently holds the record at 49 sets in a row on carpet)

Pre Monte-Carlo I actually liked the thought of this match up. Nadal has had trouble with youth and speed in the recent past with Chung and Nishioka taking him to tiebreakers last Spring. These just are not bad results against Nadal especially considering Diego's level was lower until 2nd half of 2017 into 2018:
3/2018 R16 Australian Open Hard Rafael Nadal Diego Sebastian Schwartzman 6-3 6-7(4) 6-3 6-3 1.06 - 8.00
15/2017 QF Monte Carlo Masters Clay Rafael Nadal Diego Sebastian Schwartzman 6-4 6-4 1.08 - 8.00
36/2015 R64 US Open Hard Rafael Nadal Diego Sebastian Schwartzman 7-6(5) 6-3 7-5 1.04 - 12.25

Diego finished his match pretty well yesterday, so if he has a hot day he could cause a lot of trouble despite the crazy 15 to 1 odds.

Six more victories (including this one) and Rafa has defended the pre-Roland Garros points from last year. Then he needs to defend RG itself but once we shift to BO5 tennis, the task becomes even more monumental for his rivals.

A Nadal victory seems certain but Diego can be tough if he plays as well as he did last year on clay.He is a great defender capable of getting every ball back. I f he actually defends well we might just get an idea of how much Nadal can sustain his brutal offence .

However, Diego will get broken too easily.

I don't think Diego type players stand a chance against Nadal. It can happen, like Ferrer winning a random match vs Rafa when he is a bit hampered, but it is unlikely.

Big hitters like Thiem, Del Potro and Zverev have a better chance, especially in Madrid. They still need to play smart, though, which is something I have never seen from Thiem.

Schwartzman played his best clay tennis just two months ago in winning the ATP500 Rio tournament without dropping a set. Unfortunately, he has been in the little boy's crapper on the Euroclay swing until winning twice to advance to R16.

Nadal, 6-3 6-2.

Rafa is too much of a monument for Diego to climb it. Big problem for Diego will be defending his serve. We might see a (slight) fight is Diego is able to have a decent and deep ROS.
I'd be surprised if Diego brings home more than 5 games.

I want to say that if anyone can beat Nadal it's Diego, but realistically it's gonna go 6-4, 6-1. Maybe a couple breaks in the first set.

The John Cena of tennis v The John Cena lookalike

Nadal is THE BIG SHOW. There is only 1 main event each day and that is when THE BIG SHOW hits the courts. Diego looks like Gasquet's little brother.

THE BIG SHOW v Mini Reeshard.

i'd have guessed the guys who have the best chance to beat nadal, are the tall first strike shot makers.
ie. del po comes to mind
because the moonballs won't have as much of an affect...
but they have to play lights out for 2 sets, if it goes longer, they'll tire (as the taller guys are not usually great movers)

Time for Nadal to revenge the body destroying 4 hour match he suffered at the hands(racket?) of Shortzmann at the Aus Open this year.

I expect a 64 64-ish victory from Nadal.
Peque could be a tough nut to crack, watch the 4R of Aus Open 2018 for more info.

Diego can at least hang with Rafa in the rallies so this should be a nice match to watch at least - hopefully.

A few tight games but I expect it to get smoother for Nadal as the match goes on.

Something I am observing is that in rallies where the other player is defending well, Nadal is showing much more tendency to hit UE than yesteryears

Nadal will win and likely in straights but Diego is the exact type of player that makes you work more than you'd preferably want to. That happened at the AO earlier this year.

Diego's best-case scenario is to play Nadal tight for the first set. That would be it.

If Nadal somehow choked the first set, then the score would go 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 in favor of Nadal. Because Diego would need to drain his entire tank to catch Nadal for the first set. But even then, Nadal would have to choke to help Diego out.

I pick Nadal 6-4, 6-1. Nadal does everything better than Diego does.

As far as those people that picked Diego to win; that's fine. After all, some people actually win the lottery.

Diego's best chance would have been to hire a bunch of smoking hot women to sit near Nadal and flash him.

Actually, this strategy applies to the entire field when playing Nadal on clay. People need to think outside the box.

Maybe a brown paper bag and a call to Tonya Harding ex bf?

Tbh Rafa isn’t playing his best but is still winning 6-3 and looks like he’ll win the match as well. It’s the reason why these top guys are unbeatable at times.
