Uh...... well, maybe. How many times have we seen somebody get zoned and beat some big name player and then fade? E.g., remember Sloan Stephens winning the USO? We'll see, we'll see.

Nadal's not retiring until Federer and Djokovic retire. He needs the slam record and he still has to fight off the other guys to get it. Australia is Djokovic territory and it's very possible Djokovic will be getting #17 there and closing the gap on Fedal.

Medvedev's performance today is what we have been expecting from the likes of Zverev, Khachanov and Thiem by this point against the big 3. They should all be right there in the deep stages of the Slams. But still the NextGen are clowns with no consistency.

I'd like to think (hope) this is contagious. Seeing Dimitrov and Rublev dispatch Fed, Djokovic losing to Med and nearly taking out Nadal...I'd hope this rubs off on them.

I think the prior gen is a lost cause (Dimi, Nishi, Raonic, etc). Maybe this current gen of Med, Zverev, Thiem and Khach might be able to push through. Maybe...

The 2020 season is going to be the most anticipated season in history! :) The big 3 should just pack it in and rest for 4 months. Although it's very likely Nadal might try to kill himself to get that #1 ranking.

I don't really see anything all that special in Rublev. I don't see that fighting spirit in him really. I think Tsitsipas, Berretini, Zverev, Medvedev, Thiem and Khachanov might be able to make inroads in 2020. But it would take a collective effort meaning that the likes of Nadal and Djokovic respectively will have trouble going through 2 of these young guys if the guys really bring the heat in the Slams. Similar to what happened to Nadal at USO last year when Khachanov and Thiem broke him down.

Lol a bit like me. Infact I was bemoaning the quality after 2 sets and then woke up in the middle of the 5th set asking folks what happened in between!

It became a close match after Med changed tactics around the third set.
But that should have been obvious going in . Yet, Med still decided to waste time in the beginning hanging out behind the baseline and grinding.
Really had a chance to win this with the right attacking strategy from the very start.
By "attacking" I mean occasional serve and volley, and chip and charge, and follow shots to the net (instead of backpedaling 20 feet).
None of that was there in the beginning. Just chose to grind against the GOAT grinder.

Look at those net stats especially. Daniil was also 22/29 on serve/volley points. Not sure what Rafa was, but he also serve/volleyed 20-25 times this match with a very high success rate. In Rafa's case, he really exploited Daniil's 1st serve position on the ad side, and majority of his serve/volley points came when he swung his serve out wide and moved forward behind it. Very predictable but efficient play, he must have gone out wide over 90% of time on the ad side. Daniil did nothing much to counter this. So many freebies for Rafa with that serve today.

As well as 74 net points, not too shabby for somebody who has struggled greatly with net play and finesse in the past. At this point it is unreasonable to deny that Nadal is far more accomplished in the SnV department than the likes of Sampras and Edberg.

Medvedev’s fight was incredible. Even great players like Djokovic and Murray didn’t show as much heart in their first slam finals.

Its better that Rafa had this 5-setter instead of a straight sets win :)
Rafa needed to win a tight 5-setter in a slam final, to build confidence, after losing 2018wim SF, 2017ao final, 2012ao final.

He started with what he finds most comfortable. Obviously, he’s going to play to his strengths. The fact that he switched tactics at all is a testament to his tennis IQ. And it nearly got the job done. In his first major final, against a guy who’s won 18 of them. After being down two sets to love. I really don’t see any way to criticize Medvedev after this performance, beyond a little nitpicking here and there.

Holy moly where to start. Cant believe Rafa won. It was a very jittery performance from him. Needs to improve his big point play especially with FH and serve.Some of the misses were painful to watch. Just glad he got it done in the end. Also love seeing all the haters moaning and crying. As for Rafa I hope he takes a long break, forget about YE#1, maybe just play Paris+WTF and focus on 2020.

I went to bed during the middle of the 4th set and woke up a couple of hours to see that Nadal won in 5 sets! Damn, this went to 5 sets! He should have won in 3, but he let Medvedev back in the match after breaking him and getting a bit too relaxed. I am so happy Nadal finally managed to score an important 5-sets win. He has had so many tough losses in 5 sets over the last couple of years.
As for Medvedev, I think he will beat Nadal regularly in a not-so-distant future. The difference in level between the Montreal and US Open finals were like light and day; He still needs to work on certain aspects of his game, but he will get there and will be a nightmare for Nadal (and for Djokovic too by the way). I was also very impressed to see how well he anticipated where Nadal's shots were landing and how much grit, fight and composure he showed.

Congratulations to both on producing quite the final, I wasn't expecting it to be such a crazy ride. Congratulations to Nadal for winning number 19, incredible and take a bow Medvedev for your first grand slam final. I think many more will be coming in his future.

I have to say sorry to Rafa - I didn't believe he had this kind of epic left in him. When he lost the fourth I was expecting swift defeat in the fifth. How wrong I was.

What are your thoughts on the “cheating” comments. Was a huge reason Rafa got the two breaks in the second set right?
