Meh, I won't believe this 1000th episode of "oh no, Serena is in trouble" until I see Diatchenko clinching match point.
Until then, I predict another "incredible comeback" where she starts playing in the second set and servebots to victory in the third, as her young, deer in the headlights opponent collapses from fear of having taken a set from Serena.

And so it always comes to be...
Another "incredible comeback".
And to think she was in a wheelchair just a couple of days ago!

Only seen the second set but Diatchenko looks pretty awful. Missing the court time and again with simple shots.

Serena is lucky to get this draw. She looks rusty but will presumably improve.

It's a simple equation, really.
Diatchenko never believed she could beat Serena.
Serena never believed Diatchenko could possibly beat her, even if Serena had let her lead with a break in the second.
This gives Serena plenty of time for her weird antics (yelling, outbursts, yadda yadda) and Diatchenko plenty of time to - on point - start folding like a cheap tent.
It's all very convincing in the end, but the experienced spectator knows he's seen it all before.

Serena-Diatchenko 2:6, 6:1, 1:0
Unsuccessful BH inside out stroke from Diatchenko and she lost her service at start of third set.

This girl simply can't play. She's awful.

Some encouraging shots on the Serena side if you support her, but the opponents next week will be a different kettle of fish.

Watching Kenin and looks like she going be moving on to the 2nd, up 3-2 with Gattos serving! Kenin got broken on her serve game just before! LOL!

Truth be told, there's no one like Serena. One measly match and this thread starts to resemble a civil war.

I'd love to see the Penko-Vika match, but it might be too early for me. It could either be the most competitive match in these first days or a complete s**tshow. No middle term when it involves little Alona. Sabalenka-Cibulkova can be interesting too. Lots of sniffing balls, grunts and POMMMEEE are guaranteed, at least.

Lucie/Cibulkova are not slated to compete tomorrow, I see. Really rooting for Lucie. Ending her career with a Slam doubles title would be a fitting ending for her indeed.

..and you know this by what means? Magic? Or the neverending saga of your hatred of Serena Williams? Take your pick.

She's going all the way.
Who's going to beat her?

Time to post the list of facts again do debunk this stuck-on-repeat ********.

Players who not only contend for majors, but actually win more than one time. Here's the list of non-Serena majors winners since 2010:

  • Schiavone - FO - 2010
  • Clijsters - USO 2010 & AO 2011
  • Li Na - FO 2011 & AO 2014
  • Kvitova - Wimbledon 2011 & 2014
  • Stosur - USO 2011
  • Sharapova - FO 2012 & FO 2014
  • Azarenka - AO 2012 & 2013
  • Bartoli - Wimbledon 2013
  • Pennetta - USO 2015
  • Kerber - AO 2016, USO 2016 & Wimbledon 2018
  • Muguruza - FO 2016 & Wimbledon 2017
  • Ostapenko - FO 2017
  • Stephens - USO 2017
  • Wozniacki - AO 2018
  • Halep - FO 2018
  • Osaka: USO 2018 & Osaka: AO 2019

In other news, Kvitova pulling out due to a forearm injury....well, i'm sure it will be as good as new when Wimbledon rolls around. Same for Kerber--my early pick to win that major.

Fantastic win for Stosur over Strycova in straight sets. Unseeded Sam was in the little section which had #30 Buzărnescu and #6 Kvitová. The Romanian lost and Petra withdrew so there’ll be an unseeded player in the 4R and Stosur is in prime position given her record at the French with a final and 3 SF’s. The other three in with a chance are Alexandrova, Bolsova and Cirstea.

Yes, rooting for Safarova as well. It was too bad BMS wasn't ready to compete, they made a great doubles team.

What are you guys' thoughts on how Osaka will fare in this tournament?
I think it's hard to rule out the holder of the last 2 slams. But I don't think it will be easy for her to win a title. Potential Serena match up in the QF (yes, it might happen folks), Halep in the SF, not to mention who she plays in the finals. But if she can find a way through, wow,.

As @emilyhex said, it's hard to rule out the winner of the last 2 slams. I don't think she'll win the title though.

I actually was going to write that she has a decent draw but she really doesn't.
1R: Schmiedlova is a decent clay courter with two titles on the surface.
2R: she could face either the 2017 RG champ Ostapenko or 2x slam champ, former #1 and Rome QFist Azarenka.
3R: Sakkari or last years doubles champ Siniakova should be ok.
4R: is either Garcia who just made the Strasbourg final or Keys who actually beat Osaka here at the French Open last year.
If she manages to get through that she has Serena in the QF and then Halep in the SF.

In other words, can't see it happening.
