Looking at tomorrow's matches: Nishikori, Shapovalov, Zverev, Basilashvili, Brooksby and Berrettini are the ones I will be rooting for, but I wouldn't mind Ivashka or Karatsev winning too. Really don't like Sock, Opelka and you know who ):

Just looked up Botic van de Zandschulp - he's from the Netherlands and he's #115 in the world - and he's made it to the round of 16! There are always several amazing runs at the USO, and more than the usual number this year! I haven't seen him play yet, hoping there will be a highlights video up tomorrow to watch. Maybe on Sunday we will get to see his match? I will be rooting for my man Diego though!

ESPN is a god damn joke. Show the Tiafoe vs Rublev match. I don't care about your take on Osaka's press conference

People always say they chase the ratings with their match selections and what they broadcast... but seriously I cannot believe it. Most of the time they are showing the less exciting match or just talking smack. The presenters have no idea either. That Stephanie woman obviously has no clue about tennis because shes made that many stuff ups already. E.g. today she said Tsitsipas was serving for the match in set 2...

One of these guys is going to be a first time Slam semifinalist:

Tiafoe, FAA, Gojowczyk, or Alcaraz.

Wow, what an opportunity! FAA is the only seeded player among them. Tiafoe played clutch at times against Rublev. The problem is that I don't trust either FAA or Tiafoe to win a big match, but at least they play each other... someone has to win. Alcaraz looked awesome in his win over Tsitsipas - one of the best matches at the US Open this year, and that's saying something because there have been quite a few amazing ones. Since he's only 18, he could have a huge letdown and lose the next match, or he could make it to the semis because he doesn't know any better. I follow tennis pretty closely, and I've never seen Gojowczyk play. He's 32 and has mostly had a journeyman career with one title, a career high ranking of #38, and his furthest previous Slam run being to the 2nd round of the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

One thing is for sure... if Medvedev doesn't make the final amongst the guys left on his draw, it will be a huge surprise.

Tournament winning odds gap between Djokovic and Medvedev lower now than Medvedev and Zverev, to reach the final odds are even for Djokovic and Medvedev now which is fair since meddy has a very doable path whereas Djokovic may have to go through 2 top 10 and grand slam finalists.

3, 5, 8, 9 and 10 seeds all gone by the end of Day 5.
Only 15 seeds made 2R so four of these five towards the top (Ruud at #8 lost 2R Thursday) plus #18 RBA just made it 20 out. Two others (Karatsev and Evans) flirted with disaster and had to rally from 0-2 set deficits.

Normally Italian-American day is celebrated quite heartily on Columbus Day in October. However, USTA has moved it up to today with the cooperation of a six-pack of players:

Matteo Berrettini (ITA) vs Ilya Ivashka (BLR)

Andreas Seppi (ITA) vs Oscar Otte (GER)

Jannik Sinner (ITA) vs Gael Monfils (FRA)

Reilly Opelka (USA) vs Nikoloz Basilashvili (GEO)

Jenson Brooksby (USA) vs Aslan Karatsev (RUS)

Jack Sock (USA) vs Alexander Zverev (GER)

Forza Rossa, Bianca e Azzurri !!! (Even though one flag is Rossa, Bianca e Verde)

Medvedev now up to 73% to make the final per TennisAbstract's Elo-based model. For reference, although Medvedev is a round ahead in competition, Djokovic leads the top half with 43%.

Berrettini hitting big but just lacks that touch to finish off a la Alacaraz.

Ivashka is very good at creating play to move in and finish the point.

Ivashka GOAT. I like him.
I don't mind if Berry goes out. Kind of burned out with him flopping at the big moment.

Berrettini could lose this match. Doesn't seem to be playing at that high of a level.
He's played like this in both previous rounds. Hitting way too many errors. He got away with it against Chardy by the skin of his teeth, it got him into a real struggle against Moutet before he totally fell apart. Ivashka a whole other level with the momentum he has behind him at the moment.

Basically, people are figuring out Berrettini and his limitations. He might have peaked.

Berry can keep chucking down the big serves, but when it's down to rallies, brrrrrr....not pretty.

Pathetic from Berr. What a MUG. He won't even win half a set vs Novak at this level. He can hardly rally. How can a pro player have such a pathetic backhand?
Novak has a free pass. And if Zedzilla loses, then free pass till Final.

Otte in the fourth round would be a good result. He's really improving.

Although I'm rooting for Berry, Otte into the QFs would be a neat result, too. We could have a second season of Aslan Karatsev, I suppose.

Didn't realize it, but Botic Van de Zandschulp officially crashed the top 100 yesterday. Up from #117 to #89 in the world. Not too shabby. He'll be 26 next season, but at least he might get an opportunity to play some ATP tournaments in his career.
