Ebden into the SF with a hard fought 3 set win. Had some serious choking throughout but gets there in the end. Not sure if he's ever made a tour level SF before, I'll have to check when I'm on a computer next.

His ranking now skyrockets 72 spots to #177 in the world. Hope he can crack the top 100 once again in coming months.

I'm struggling to get more excited by the Båstad or Plava Laguna draws tbh.
Okay Brown, Monfils and Fognini I'll watch but I like to watch grass when it's there..

Defending champ and 2nd seed Ivo Karlovic loses to Peter Gojowczyk of Germany in 3 sets (all tiebreaks).

SF now is Qualifier Ebden v Gojowczyk. One of them will make their first ever ATP singles final.

Did you hear a member of crowd calling out at 1 set all, 1 game all, "come on Peter, send him back to Yugoslavia".
Disgusting.

One thing shouting about Yugoslavia knowing Ivo wouldn't give him a slap right? I'm sure the bloke would keep his mouth shut if stood next to him or Ivo would slap the taste out of his mouth.

There's always the cheap shots against Eastern Europeans in the West regardless of politics, how much hatred is there against the Russians? When most have nothing to do with that bloke who has his face stretched every 6 months and rides a bear.

Peter did send Ivo somewhere -- in tiebreaks no less. Never occurred to me to watch it. Who on earth is Peter?

Highlights of Ivo v. Peter Gojowczyk:
IN the first TB, Ivo dumped a sitter and then double faulted. In the 3rd, he again just didn't come up with the goods. # 78 Peter G played very solid.
Interesting fact on Ivo: despite hightest ace count in the tour, Ivo wins only barely 50% of tiebreaks.

Maybe that's because nobody breaks him but he breaks the inferior players. So he generally only plays tiebreaks against the best players. He broke Kudla three times, which is kind of stunning.

Dr Ivo can lose his way on serve sometimes and in close tie breaks that is enough.
Peter Gojowczyk was throwing quite a few double faults in earlier but was able to match and slightly exceed the good Dr in the third this time...

Good win for DiBjorno but wow, not who I would have predicted making the semis. PHH is not the smartest player. He didn't start attacking the net until late in the match, he's got a perfect game for grass and doesn't use it.

Wouldn't it be great if SexiRogi WCs into Newport towards the end of his career. Maybe when he gets inducted after he's done they'll give him a spot in the draw.

Good call so him and Klaasen can bag a slam.

Ram has 2 tour level titles, I say he made out like a bandit.

He's partnering this week with Aisam Qureshi this week and they fought off like 8 match points against Paes/Groth - was pretty awesome to see Rampras fired up after saving match points -now they are in the finals!

He's certainly the odds on favorite now but I really like what Mattie Ebden has done to get to the SFs. I'm sure @Aussie Darcy will second that emotion. It's been a long hard slog back from injuries.

Isner vs Ebden Final

Isner has not face a break point all week.

I'm pulling for Ebden in two tiebreaks. Get a first time champ out of this.

Plays the winner of Gojo and Ebden. I'm just about to catch up on that match :)

Isner wins over Ebden 6-3, 7-6. yeha for the title. If the July clay events are in some kind of trouble, Newport survives only with hall of fame ceremonies keeping it relevant.

I think the problem is that there are only six weeks between Wimbledon and the US Open, when there used to be seven. Sometimes, there would be no tournaments the week after Wimbledon, just Davis Cup. And with a week's break first, these events might get better draws.

I also can't understand why someone like Lopez doesn't play Newport. Or Muller. It could be a great opportunity for them. If I were them, I'd play on grass whenever I got the chance.

Muller is in US so he might have withdrawn given his Wimby run.

Congrats to Big John on winning his 11th title, all at 250 level, and 3rd at Newport. Hope Mat Ebden manages to get his maiden title soon.

Newport has to go the Queens week and get the US players before they go to UK. Then it would get all the US players plus any foreigners who live and train in Florida. As it is now with the compressed schedule Newport is irrelevant.

Congrats to Sir John blnt Ebden 63 76(4)

Sir John
“It’s hard to win a tournament. It’s no small feat to come out here and be the last man standing. I’m very happy about that,” said Isner, who is expected to return to the Top 20 of the Emirates ATP Rankings on Monday. “It’s been two years since I won a tournament, so I had that weighing on my mind."

I hope Isner plays like this through to the hardcourt swing. He completely dropped his pushing moon-balling tactic from earlier on in the year and was really hitting his forehand with some purpose. Looked really bouncy and athletic in that final -- moved so well.

Enjoyable final. John had just over 3 hours playing time Vs over 9 for Ebden going in to the match. He played the quallies.
Irrelevant in terms of fitness perhaps. A six match winning streak for Ebden whose been injured a lot.
Todd M saying he'll get a wildcard in straight next time if necessary :)

It looked for a while like Ebden was going to make it 3 setter but a few errors in the tie breaker put paid to that.
Again a game of small margins and big up for John to have kept his serving up.
Yes agree with the about and Todd, John played some fine tennis. Great half volley pickups and yeah let's hope for the Harcourt forehand.

Nice to see a Prince racquet win something... At last!
Wonder if he's tired the Phantom yet?

If you want a US champ more often, leave the schedule alone ;)

The whole point of the 250's is to allow concurrent tournaments attract and give some success to non top tier players. Spread it around a bit.
