The What's wrong with Grigor Dimitrov? Thread

Later today Dimitrov takes on Frenchman Benoit Paire in the semi-final of the Stockholm tournament. If the Bulgarian wins the match, it will be his second appearance in a tour level final following Brisbane at the beginning of this year.

If the match isn't fixed he should easily destroy paire. I sense some fishy stuff going on though after the raonic debacle.

He went 0-2 at Kooyong, straight set losses to Nishikori and Verdasco. A 1-3 start to the year if you include exhibitions. Not great,I think he was probably working on his fitness mainly over the off season...

Nothing wrong with Dimitrov so far at the Australian Open. :)

Grigor and the Elite Eight (minus Del Potro) is in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. How awesome is that for your slam quarterfinal debut?

Time for a bump (after today's proceedings)?
I left the match to go and get some groceries at the beginning of the 3rd set in case the weather gets really bad tomorrow thinking the result was a foregone conclusion. Shocked!

apparently he hasn't fully recovered (his own words after the match)

i don't buy it anymore

if he wasn't fully recovered why enter the tourney in the first place?

He has to constantly try to hide the fact he never was that good to begin with. Yes, I know his fans will counter with, "yeah, well Grigor won a Masters 1000 and the YEC last year!" They neglect to reference the quality of his opponents in both matches. Until Dimi beats Fed or Nadal in a slam or wins a slam, he will not garner much respect among many tennis fans. And "getting close" to beating Rafa, like in the 2017 AO, doesn't count. I predict he does nothing this year and will be outside the top 15 by 2019. No way will he defend the points he wracked up in Cincy or the YEC.

Dimitrov just cannot keep go into latter rounds and play like in the earlier rounds. I has this problem when I play tournaments. Just lost interest and mental focus in the later rounds due to fatigue and the grind of previous matches had on me! Just not in the match as much! Very tough to over come! Maybe get into better shape?

Except in this case it wasn't a latter round, it was a 1st round!

His problem is that he’s a mental midget and big game choker.

So nothing all that bad...

What do you think stops him from being able to beat the greats of the preceeding era?

For me it's all "just" mental, but that shortcoming is so all-encompassing that he may never be able to overcome it.

I'm slightly more bullish than you are about his future but i agree about the wtf win. It looks great on paper but he didnt beat any of his most problematic opponents.

I would love to see him "flick a switch" and go from headcase to major winner because i find him great to watch and it would be interesting to have an extra personality in the ATP ruling class.

His last two losses in majors truly have been head scratchers.

Many say it's "mental". I don't think so. Grigor is one of the biggest athletes out there. His physical preparation is so good that gets to the end of the year still in perfect form. And that is where he won some good trofies last year.
I do think his tennis is a bit overrated though. As an all-rounder player, he does everything pretty well, but not exceptionally well.
His serve is not fluid, and many times insecure. His forehand is very good, but doesn't really stand out as shot, in comparison with many other players. His backhand is very good, but far from excelent, and the slice is kinda floating. Top spin BH is good but not many variations on it. Net play is also good, but can get insecure as well.

His fans will counter with "OMG who the hell cares I know Grigor isn't as good as he was hoped to be but I'll support him anyway and take any win I can get, thank you very much goddamnit."

I don't have to delude myself my favorite players are infallible, or perfect, or whaterver the hell. They can be headcases, hacks or straight up untalented ****s, but I like them.

Nobody is talking like he's guaranteed to clean up should Federer break a leg. So I don't see why the hell people have a need to talk down so much.

He's won a Masters 1000, won the WTF, reached GS semi's, been #3 in the world, and that's better than 99.999% of people who ever pick up a racket. The guy is great dude, and an amazing player. Just not the best, and that can be totally fine.

At times; one just meets a player playing above his level and you are rolled! Maybe, thanplayer at that could win against any top player; he on fire! .It happens that he is in the "zone" and everything he hits goes in and is a point!

Agree with you 100% but is it too late in his career to alter the mechanics of so many key strokes?

Dunno really. I think Vallverdu is doing a god job in giving a sense to Grigor's game. As an all-rounder tennis player it can get confusing. Is Grigor an aggressive player? Is he more of a defensive player?
The baby-Fed thing want's that he is an aggressive player.
Is he really so?
Or to put it better, is that where Grigor can get the best from his game, by being an aggressive player?
He has excelent physical qualities, and could work on being a defensive/counterpuncher player for example, why not? Though to be so he has to work on variation on FH and BH shots. I notice that in rallies, Grigor will go for the same BH crosscourt for 10 shots, with the same pace, same spin, same height on the net, same speed, same deepness and will slice only for defence, or will lift the ball only for defence, and might go for along the line winner making error many times because it comes the moment that he wants to get out of that rally. His rallies sometimes look like training!

put rafa's stick in grigor's hands (no pun intended) for a few months and i think we'll get some answers as to how he can improve.

for now, he's just running in circles around mediocrity.

I think he needs to change the racquet string to full natural gut or full synthetic gut. A lot of his serves hit the net. It will also add power to his backhand which often lands short on the court. His forehand is erratic and hits the net a lot. I think he needs to use a simpler eastern forehand and hit the forehand flat and deep consistently.

Yes, that's a great idea. He should change his strings and change his forehand, that'll SURELY get him some better rhythm.

If you see how he played the two games before de 5-4 in the fifth, and how he played the 5-4 game on his serve to close it out, you will understand what is wrong with Dimi.

The problem is he's a decent looking guy and is getting distracted by Sharapova and other women.
I think he was more distracted by the sexiness across the net from him last night... everyone knows Grigor isn't interested in women! And Tommy is one good looking young man.

Way to defensive overall game, his serve is very hitchy and his 2nd serve is pretty bad. Dude got past down the line so many times, I'm not sure if the problem is most likely too conservative an approach, wrong position at the net, or wrong time to come in.

The standard response when someone's jealous of a good looking dude - "he must be gay".

a) I'm a female so not jealous of "a good looking dude", b) I don't find Grigor attractive, c) in the same post I said Tommy Paul was very good looking yet didn't call him gay, so there goes your argument, and d) everyone knows Grigor is light in the loafers.

oh his backhand grip is a bit towards a weaker grip imo where the wrist is bent and no good on high balls compare his grip to that of Stan the man or Gasquet or even Fed. Grigor is imo the weakest grip on the backhand side, thus he will slice too much and once you slice in the mens game you are going to lose ground
