The Hong Kong Open is back for the first time on the ATP tour since 2002 where Juan Carlos Ferrero won the edition.

Rublev, Khachanov, Tiafoe and Cerundolo are the top 4 seeds.

Marin Cilic has entered the tournament on a Protected Ranking after spending most of 2023 out with a knee issue.

Tight match between Ruusuvuori and Bonzi so far - separated by just 4 ranking positions.

Earlier Shang won in just under 3h vs Djere - great to see China's men more prominent on tour nowadays (Zhang and Wu also featuring - a few years ago China had no notable men).

Unfortunately for Wu, he is too injury prone, he is off the court since September/October and he is not on the entry list of AO or any tournaments in the foreseeable future, I doubt he will have a consistent presence on tour.

Sometimes players do just get injured, rehab and reassess their approach and then don't suffer from injuries as much - hopefully that's the case for him. It's shocking how many players are sidelines so early in their career and can never fully flourish to meet their potential. I think of Chung and Edmund in recent years but there have been many more.

Almost a year off the court, Cilic is back and he looks fresh, but sadly his mental game is still the same!

Really impressed with Shang the 18 year old. Has good power on his FH for being on the small side. Could be one to watch this year. Probably needs to bulk up a bit.

Nice to see Rublev taking so many balls on the rise. He was really going after it today against an in form opponent.
Ruusuvuori is a mixed bag. Sometimes laser sharp and then, when it matters, seemingly impotent. Losing his serve to love when he needed to stay in the proceedings is almost a criminal offence- there should be a law against it! But I concede that Rublev raised his game with considerable aplomb to get the breaks he needed, and to consolidate them. Good stuff from AR, gaining a boost to the start of the season, and the imminent AO.

Bit of interest for me in the doubles too as Arevalo / Pavic win the title. MA partnered Rojer (one of my doubles favourites) to win the FO in 2022 and the Canadian Masters in 2023. Perhaps more importantly, he is a Federer fan, and welcome at my table any time for that reason alone! Looool! It'll be interesting to see how the teams playing against previous partners will do as @ ey039524 pointed out in the Atp Brisbane thread.

Congrats to Rublev on winning his 15th title, 9th at 250 level and becoming the 1st of the current top #10 to win a singles title this season.
