These 2 players are meeting for the 2nd time only. Previous match was 6 years ago in Nice, France and unfortunately the young Australian had to retire after injury midway through the match.

Thiem is the defending finalist at this event, having lost the 5 set thriller to Serbian superstar Novak Djokovic last year 4-6 6-4 6-2 3-6 4-6. Whereas Nick was handed defeat by the greatest warrior of tennis world, Rafael Nadal in the 4th round of Australian open last year, 3-6 6-3 6-7 6-7.

Coming into this match, The Austrian World no3 has taken down Mikhail Kukushkin and Dominik Koopfer in straight sets in first and second rounds respectively. Whereas the Australian defeated qualifier Silva in straight sets and 29th seed Humbert in 5 set epic in 1R & 2R respectively.

What's your take on this match, fellow ttw posters?? How do you think the match goes? This is the first blockbuster we have at our hands at this year's first grandslam tournament.

Please keep the discussion civilized and respectful, lovely ladies and gentlemen. Thank you, love you all.

Against Thiem it will come to the breakers. Thiem can't return well so Nick could coast on serve.

Luckily, Timmy has been pretty good in tiebreaks lately, so he should pull through.

Finally a good match to wake up for. Me body is ready.

Thiem in 3-4, but you just never know with Kyrgios. He really plays well against the top players. On a fast AO surface too? The upset is definitely possible.

Thiem won the US open which was playing about as fast as this, I see no problems for Thiem.

Nice thread Carl.

I think this will be a fairly routine Thiem win. Kyrgios may sneak out a set, but I think Thiem will be far too consistent. He won’t waste his chances the way Humbert did today.

Actually I think this is what will happen. Nick would have to have his most consistent serving day ever and Thiem have an off day. For both to happen is unlikely, so Thiem in four.

Thank you, sir/ma'am.

I also think that Thiem will take it in straights or 4 sets at maximum.

Kyrgios will be exhausted after a 5 setter and then doubles, so chances of a flaccid performance in this match are high

But he’s always in with a puncher’s chance if he serves well

He's playing doubles also? That won't help him out if he wants to stay competitive with Thiem.

define top players please

in slams, his only win against a top guy is that one against Nadal at Wimbledon almost 7 years ago.

Nick’s 8-2 in five set matches and you know he’s beaten Djoker both times they played. He also beat Nadal in Acapulco in 2019. Those are the quintessential top players.

against who?

I don't really count Bo3, plenty of guys beat Big 3 in best of three sets nowadays. not to mention one of the wins was against a lifeless 2017ovic and the other against Nadal at some minor HC tournament. but hey, you can admire it if you want. Nadal beat him in the last couple slam matches that matter and I know Djoko would school him in 3 sets if they met again, especially here at AO.

This thread is really gonna be a saltmine of galactic proportions, isn't it?

Hope the match starts at a respectable time for me to watch it.

Thiem could not beat Djokovic WITH the crowd and a 2 set to 1 lead.
Now he will have the whole Crowd against him and Nick will win in 4. I thought they liked Thiem but when Courier mentioned his name last night they booed for days.
