I watched Goffin closely in Tokyo, where he displayed enormous intensity and agression... Compared to that form he is at 20 percent at most. Shocking, pity, stupid, overwhelmed, whatever it is, he is not a shadow of what he was a handful of weeks ago.

Baby being the key word here.

Goffin is no Ferrer either, play style is different.

Not particularly no. I also don't think he reads the ball particularly well either. He looks no faster than your average top 20 player to me.

He's definitely a good mover. Who do you think is an average mover in the top 20? Most guys today move very well especially at the top of the rankings but he's probably in the second tier of movers - the top tier being guys like Djokovic, Nadal, Murray, Dimitrov etc...

Yup, night and day. Goffin is one of those players that can be deceptively aggressive when he's at his best. He's lacking intensity in both his movement and his shots, probably due to the knee?

I'm officially changing my original prediction that Goffin will beat Thiem.

Goffin isn't playing right at all, that knee's probably an issue. Looks uninterested and unfit.

Grigor will top the group if he wins btw. 3-way tie is impossible since Goffin has yet to play Thiem and both will have 1 loss already. Dimitrov will win any 2-way ties as he's beaten (or will soon beat) Thiem/Goffin. (PCB out of contention since 2-0 loses to any 2-1)

PCB gonna play two dud matches before he even hits a single ball lol, either way winner of Thiem and Goffin will decide second place in the group.

Goffin is playing with that black knee straps on his white legs for weeks now, so I do not see evidence for such "explanation"... Interesting what he has to say after the match though.

Dimi clearly a bad matchup as well; loves the Goffin balls and reads him well. Big enough first serve to dominate Goffin's poor first return. Goffin could break if he saw a lot of 2nd serves. Goffin's serve not quite big enough to expose Dimitrov return game.

Fair enough, could be good old fashioned fatigue or just a bad day at the office.

Baby Fed eating Goffin up just like his daddy.

Goffin should allow a couple of MPs for Dimi on his serve. They will stay in his head when Dimi needs to close the match on his serve:D

Yes, and as another poster said the Davis Cup Final may also play a role in this; Goffin does not have that big of an engine, and he knows the china and tokyo wins took a lot from him, so he will want to get the tank refueled for that DC final next weekend. At least after going down 4-0 in rapid fashion in the first it was in his mind somewhere.

Inverse correlation around here making Murray fans some of the smartest.;)
I really think that which players you like depends a lot on how you look at tennis. Nadal and especially Federer fans are huge bandwagons, therefor the most casual and mostly have fans because what they do looks cool, so I don't consider the average Fed fan to be super knowledgable.

It's more fringe players that have more knowledgeable fan, especially if their game is somewhat intricate rather than super pretty. Murray has this going for him as well, but if I had to name any player that would probably have the most knowledgable fans my best guess would be Gilles Simon

Or Thiem the next round. Would much, much rather have seen a three setter than this.

@The Green Mile approved though he seems to be on the Fed bandwagon of late.

Quite a few outliers to your theory posting in this thread.:D

The usual curse of losing the next match after a big upset win lives on. Unexpected score. Congrats Dimi for the win and for playing well this week.

I wouldn't say more, because if we go by outright numbers, there will be more knowledgeable Fed and Nadal fans than other fanbases. But you might be correct in saying that percentages of each fan base may see more knowledgeable fans for lesser known players. Relatively.

Yeah I'm obviously talking about averages. Naturally the most knowledgable fans are very likely to also be fans of one top player or another.

Great quote and insight into Dimitrov.

Dimitrov: I was just thinking right now as soon as I finished. You get a few days out of the year that whatever you touch turns into gold and I think today that was the first set for sure. You have days like that... But I worked for those days.
