Question for the TTW trivia nerds:

How many times has a guy gone on to win a five-set semi-final and then go on to win the final, where the other semi-final wasn't also a five-setter?

From the top of my mind, Nole at USO 2011 and AO 2012. Nadal RG 2013.

Follow-up question: How many times have the players winning a five-set semi-final lost the final?

From the top of my mind, Nole USO 2013, Nole Wimbledon 2013, Thiem RG 2019, Nole RG 2015

Which ones am I missing?
Edberg USO1992 for the first question

A shame, match is over.

But Tsits gave it his all.

It's Zverev's turn to push these titans to 5 sets in the later stages of a slam. Med abd Stef already have.
But why can't they do more? Medvedev at least fought until the last point in USO 2019. Tsitsipas just played a pathetic fifth set. Just like Murray in RG 2015.

Congrats to Tsitispas for giving it his best. He could have just rolled over in the 3rd set when Djoker had match point on his serve. But he pushed hard to get this to 5 sets.

The problem for the rest of the field is that Djoker is an iceman. He's extremely tough to take out in the 5th set. It takes something special to beat Djoker in the 5th. You have to close out Djoker in 4, or you will lose. That's the magic of Djoker.

I will same the same for Nadal. He better close out Djoker before the 5th set, even on clay, or he will lose.

Tsitsi is totally out of gas... Novak is slightly better, hopefully he will have enough time to recover for THE mach.

Tsits running out of gas in the fifth is a pity. Shouldn‘t he be fitter? Kudos to him for putting up a fight, though.

It's a measure of Novak's mental strength on how he wins deciding sets by 6-1, 6-2 or so. He just wills himself over and NO ONE can match him.
His mental strength is UNREAL. Far better than anyone else in this era.

Djoko just needs to move Tsit side to side for 2 more games, and that's all folks.

Tsitsipas managed to steal a couple sets while absolutely redlining, but his average level just can't keep up with a Djokovic over 5 sets.

Novak always keeps doing the same thing from first point to match point. It's relentless consistency and damn near impossible to hit through it accurately enough to take 3 full sets from him without massive donations on Novak's end.

Still think Djokovic beats Nadal. He is clearly in much better form. He didn't play bad in the last 2 sets, Tsitsipas was just extremely clutch on all break points. Nobody would have a chance to convert them.

What a pathetic fifth set from Tsitsipas. Reminds me of Murray in RG 2015.

He's playing a 5 setter and gets Nadal in the final, who straigth setted his opponent and had at least 5 more hours of rest.

You're saying this now after watching what you have?
I mean was half joking there. I'm impressed with Stefanos in how he fought in sets 3 and 4 but he shouldn't be the one running on fumes when he's 11 years younger than his opponent

This is the worst possible outcome. After all that and a crappy 5th - I hate that. But Kudos to Tsits for fighting and getting there.

This is pretty strange tbh. All that fight back from Tsitsipas and now he decides to look tired and play tired looking shots.

Good post. Djokovic is impossible to beat in 5 sets. Federer and Nadal have both been burned so many times. So has the rest of the ATP.

I think it genuinely took him an extraordinary effort to come back. He was clutch too and his shotmaking was truly brilliant. It's a shame he's having this letdown though, no doubt.

Great litmus test for Aristotle Jesus' fitness. He'll know the work he still has to put in.

Hopefully he has one last big push TAKE CARE OF serve and make Djokovic work till the end. But to me he looks roasted, fried.
