2021 Wimbledon QF: (6) Roger Federer SUI vs (14) Hubert Hurkacz POL

What the score?

  • Total voters
    108
  • Poll closed .
There's no way in hell fed loses 3 of those 4 matches if he was of the same age (USO 11, USO 15, Wim 19). Federer had his lapses, but significant cause was physical difference(in turn leading to some mental difference)
You can’t blame it all on age. Novak has won close matches against players younger than him. For example Tsitsipas at french final. A 12 year difference in age but it was Novak who was the stronger physically and mentally in the 5th set.

Sad to see and really it does look all over for Roger. Hurkacz was quite solid but overall nothing special but was a horrible match by Federer. True, I thought when he lost to Robredo and Millman at the US Open that was the end and he came back from those losses (albeit at almost 40 it seems unlikely he can do so again to the point of seriously contending to win another major title).

that's because young gen sucks in slams till now - just as badly as worst gen, if not worse. Tpas couldn't even close it out from 2 sets to love up, not even a BP in the last 3 sets.
Bring in Wim 15 final Djoko or USO 15 final Djoko. 2021 Djoko loses to either. That's whom fed was losing to when playing well in slams in 15. Heck AO 16 fed wins AO 21 in place of Djokovic.
No one at Roddick-Hewitt-Murray-Safin-Wawrinka level currently among young players, let alone prime ATG level.

Its not all on age, but it is the most significant factor.

Federer also dominated Rao-Dimi-Nishi gen FTR.

Stop making excuses. Feds had his chances to win more. If he gets past in the race than just accept it and praise Djokovic and Nadal.

the worst gen and young gen in slams being just as bad is reality.
If Nadal/Djokovic achieve more, they achieve more. Doesn't mean above isn't real.

Jesus Christ a bagel at Wimbledon of all places, sad to see Federer playing like that and that slip was awful, he was looking ok up until that part

The volley that lost Fed the match... And it was so beautifully played up to that final shot

This slip looked dangerous. I hope his knees are ok.

Bagel was payback for Fed's despicable and disrespectful attitude at RG. Teaches a good lesson about treating slams as practice sessions.
I hope all other players got that memo.
On the bright side, Fed is cementing his reputation as the MOAT (Most Overrated of All Time). Well done :p

I wonder when roger is gonna retire. He put all this effort into wimbledon and he won’t even see the semis. I think you can say his year is already screwed.
LOL! 39 years old played a few matches in two years and made quarters of Wimbledon. The real question here is, what is wrong with most of the other, younger tennis players not named Nadal and Djokovic.
In my book, this is impressive.

Oh look who's back from the cave.

90% of the tour would take a QF result at Wimb if it meant treating RG as a practice session.

100% of the tour would take a QF result at Wimb if it meant treating RG as a practice session at the age of 39.

Posted this Monday.

Wonder if Fed really relishes the prospect of making the final only to face Djokovic yet again?

Against anybody else, I think he would go in with some confidence but after the horror finale of 2019 and the likelihood of going down a FOURTH time to his principal Wimbledon rival might just make him do an RG and pull out at that point. He would claim he was saving himself for Tokyo given it's almost certainly his last chance to win an OSG.

Anybody else think that likely?

Nope, making note of those ********* or fed haters trying to mock now. They will either be made to regret what they did either by me or karma will get them.
You jackasses will get your comeuppance either way.
I don't see much mocking here... Only few, and often triggered by some Fed fans...
Me personally am happy Fed lost, happy for bagel, but deeply inside sad a bit, great career is ending slowly (on the other hand I'm little scared Fed will come batto slam winning form)...

I see you dropped Nadal like a hot potato now that he is going to be surpassed by Djokovic. Like a typical bandwagon jumping, glory hunting lowlife that you are!

Totally wrong from Nadal as well. And Osaka, since we're at it. Time to stop indulging the diva attitude and stop that hideous trend of cherry picking events played, out of greedy calculations and hubris, especially when it comes to slams.

Nadal is still the clay GOAT though. Better than being the MOAT (Most Overrated of ALL Time) ;):p

I thought Hubi would have been too overwhelmed to see it through but he proved me wrong. Good on him.

Fed will survive. He has those 20 slams to comfort him.

I don't know hes still not that far away. hard to say. if he can clean up his ground strokes he wins this match easy. on the other hand I do feel like a lot of the reason he is shanking is because his movement isn't quite as good so he's not getting to the balls quite in time or he's off balance or rushed when sets up his shot. That movement isn't going to improve. Also just not a good serving day for him and in order to win he needs to be on with his serve. I could still see him competing coming back next year on grass if he is able to stay healthy--long odds but with a perfect draw and setup could take it. The question is does he want to continue to put the work in and grind the tour.

Djokovis is indeed the MOAT....

Fed would've won 30 slams if Djokodal were 5/6 years older than him and he had to deal with a younger generation consisting of Dimitrov, Raonic, Nishikori etc.

It's the other way around. If Djokodal had hit their prime before Fed, Fed would have been lucky to stick around as the 3rd wheel, Murray style, which is fair because Fed is the least impressive of the big 3, but never happened just because Fed predated the other 2.

Keep dreaming...Fed started struggling against Djokovic after he broke all tennis records and was past his prime with a drop in motivation. Fed is outperforming Murray at 39 and has always dominated him but he will be at the same level as Murray? LMAO. Stop smoking and get back to reality.

He would've whopped Djokovic and would've figured out Nadal earlier with an age advantageof 5 to 6 years with a transition to a bigger racquet earlier. I'll give Nadal multiple slams on clay but he would be nowhere anywhere near 20 slams. He would end up with RG's only and Djokovic would be left mimicking other tennis players like the clown he is.

Djokodal have been very lucky to not have any ATG's for three generations following them. Hell Fed is eons better than Raonic and company at 39. He would have been dominating and cleaning house like there is no tomorrow. 30 slams minimum.

I was the ONE vote on here who had Hurkarcz winning in 3 sets!!!!! I knew he was going to win! My only surprise was the 3rd set bagel!!!!

the next match is going to be awesome! Usually when a player wins against 2 top 10 players in a row they lose the third one but I don't know which way the semi is going to go! It ought to be an exciting match!

You guys being tough on Fed. He could've easily lost to Mannarino in the 1st round. HH was excellent today. He has a good game for grass. He's not some nobody. I watched his match with Med and he's got great movement for 6'5, big groundies and a big serve. He and Berretini are going to give Joker a tougher challenge than Fed ever could at 40.

All of this is true, but it was still pretty disheartening to see Fed in position time and time again, and then hitting some awful UE. Let's hope he's got a couple more resurgences in him.

Apparently a woman in the audience screamed really loud as HH was retrieving the ball and right before Federer was setting up at the net for the putaway. 2:3 in the tiebreaker.

So stupid.

Hurkacz deserved the win; credit to him for a good performance.

Federer did well to get to the QFs of Wimbledon this year. Exceeded expectations in my opinion.

Won in straights including a bagel, so I'd hope so. ;)

The QF always looked like the likely place where reality would set in, unless a miracle happened à la 2017 AO ...

With it being Hurkasz rather than Med, I had hoped Fed might squeeze through, or at least make things competitive. He might have done if he had remembered to bring his forehand.

Shame about the bagel, but making the QF at nearly 40 and after two knee surgeries is a good result. Oldest Wimbledon quarterfinalist in the Open Era. (y)
