Robredo is a better player than Baghdatis. Look at not only their current rankings but everything they have done in the last 3 years. Baghdatis in 2006 had that one big tournament Robredo probably will never have, and both were in the top 10 together that year (Robredo higher ranked even that year) but injuries have regressed Baghdatis to the point that he is no longer in the same league as even a solid but unspectacular player like Robredo. Baghdatis is probably more talented but Robredo has had his career relatively uninterupted by injuries allowing him to maximize his potential in a way Baghdatis has not been able to.

Baghdatis's win over Federer was a huge win for him and a terrific achievement at this point in his career. Do keep in mind though it took Federer playing an awful match, Baghdatis playing as well as he possibly could have within his current abilities, and Federer still badly choking at the end to lose it. So that he would lose to even someone like Robredo next round was pretty much expected.

Robredo is not a better player than Baghdatis. No way. I don't know how Marcos didn't win last nite, he had like a million opportunities. And even still, his career H2H against Robredo is 3-1 in Marcos' favour even after last night. You say look at what they've done over the last 3 years? Em, Baghdatis has spent practically all of those years injured and is now only beginning to come around to his true form again. So how is that a valid arguement? Imo, Marcos moves better, has a WAY bigger serve, has a more reliable backhand, and a more solid forehand. I don't know how you can say Robredo is better, he will never beat the big players that Marcos can. And by the end of this year, the ranking will be in Baghdatis' favour too, just wait.

I see the ever-complaining nadal is playing doubles , on HC. wow, speak of hypocrisy !

Q. Do you like playing doubles?

RAFAEL NADAL:
I like play doubles with friends. Marc is very good friend, and for me is in long tournaments like these ones, you have day off, you can play, no, and I enjoy.

You know, that’s makes me improve a lot the volley, because today my volley improved a lot than the first days, no? That’s because I played two matches before in doubles, and that can help me for the singles, too.

I can return more aggressive than the singles, and I practice a little bit more the serve, no? I play more relaxed, so that’s important, no? I feel my volley improves in the last three days, so that’s important thing.

Sure, I am very happy to be in semifinals of doubles for me, and especially for my partner. But important thing for me, too, is play doubles to keep improving my game on singles.

He should stop whining about the ATP schedule then - that is what I was referring to as hypocrisy .

I disagree on the movement and reliability part. Baggy has better shots on a good day but Robredo is as consistent as he is bland (ie: plenty).

You dont think Marcos has better movement? He's probably the quickest guy on tour up to the net to chase a drop for example

"Indian Wells Thursday Men's Preview

Tomas Berdych takes a 3-6 record into his quarter-final clash with Rafael Nadal.

The bottom half of the quarter-finals at the BNP Paribas Open on Thursday is led by World No. 3 and defending champion Rafael Nadal against No. 19 seed Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic and No. 21 Juan Monaco of Argentina against No. 20 Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia.

In the day session match, Monaco and Ljubicic square off for the third time (tied 1-1). Monaco is the sixth different Argentine in the past seven years to reach the quarter-finals here while Ljubicic is appearing in the quarter-finals for the fourth time in five years.

In the evening session, Nadal takes a 6-3 record against Berdych, who is making his first quarter-final showing here. The Spaniard has won the past five times against Berdych and this is the sixth different ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament they are meeting in.

On Friday, the top half quarter-finals will be played with No. 4 seed Andy Murray taking on No. 6 Robin Soderling and No. 7 Andy Roddick playing No. 18 Tommy Robredo.

You may be right, I was only comparing the quality of his opponents Fed vs. Robredo. It was a bit tongue-in-cheek.

I didn't watch either match, but what I've read is that Fed was playing well, except maybe at the tail end of the match. Moreover, judging from his most recent results, it seems Baghdatis is finding some form back.

Robredo is currently a better player than Fed. Fed has been terrible in best of 3 matches on hard court for quite some time now.

He did win a hardcourt Masters in 2009, which I'm pretty sure way better than anything Robredo's ever done on hardcourts...

I was disappointed Federer lost, especially since I was there to see it happen. I think he'll do better in Miami. I think when he fails to close it out with three match points (and that break in the third), it's really lack of match practice. Nadal looks to have a pretty easy road to the final now.

I caught Andy Murray's wristband at the match yesterday! Very exciting.

Seriously, Baghy follows his epic win against Fed by a loss to Robredo?? This is a crime, Marcos!

Did you see the match? Tommy played well, and my thought is it took so much out of Marcos to beat Roger he didn't have enough left.

Even if he'd had enough left to beat Tommy, I'm not sure he would have had enough to beat a motivated A-Rod in a QF.

I try not to vote, generally. I don't want to jinx it for the defending champion.
Just happy to see him moving and playing well. \o/

(And advancing in doubles as well! Though I've gotta say if it were all up to me, Fer and Feli would've been on the other side of the draw so the all-Spanish match could've been in a later round ... which is how I know it's sooo not up to me. :) )

lol ... very thoughtful of you ... I've been very impressed with the defending champ so far, and he seems to have even more fans at IW this year than he did last year :) .... oh that would have been a tasty all Spanish match ......

as it is, they face aspelin (swe) and hanley (aut) tomorrow, which is scheduled for Stadium 2, 3pm Cali time, which is 6pm Eastern, 10 pm GMT? I sure hope it's televised, because I'm sure the stadium w/b packed out ....

I'm thrilled with the serve, banana-bending fearhand, crosscourt backhand, and most of all, good movement.
You know what I *don't* want to see ... I'm not even gonna speak it aloud.

It is going to be interesting if we see a Rafa/A-Rod semi, since we know the mighty A-Rod loves to play at home and loves his night matches ...

.... oh that would have been a tasty all Spanish match ......
I was more than a little peeved I missed it, but as you say, coverage does not always accommodate
(And I shouldn't whine at all, since apparently Rafa and Marc got a WC; they weren't even seeded -- but I was all "Who put them on the same side of the draw???")

I have a friend there; she's a Nole fan, so I hope she gets her butt to this match.

LOL! Just doing my best to try to be a good fan! :-D

Fed lost to Benneteau in Paris and to Tsonga in Canada. Before and after Cincy he hasn't done well in best of 3 on hard but yes he could do better in Miami because the surface is faster and less high bouncing. I'm not holding my breath though. When was the last time Fed made a final in Miami? Cincy 2009 was an exception rather than the rule.

Umm I hope that statement is out of context and not what you really meant otherwise it is crazy. Robredo did play better in this particular tournament than Federer yes.
That was kind of a joke. :) My point is Fed has been unimpressive on hard court non slams (including WTF) for quite a while.
I would like to add that it's amusing how people still consider Fed a much better player than Nadal on hard, it's definitely not true in non slams. In the last masters, Fed lost to Benneteau, Karlovic, Tsonga, Baghdatis (even Blake in the Olympics), all players Rafa would not- and did not- lose to. The players Rafa lost to: Djoko and Davy are players who beat Fed as well. (I'm still talking best of 3 of course)

And if anybody can find a stream for the doubles match, please let us know!!! If Isner/Querrey win later on today (tonight for me), they will be in the final with Nadal/Lopez and THAT would be serious fun to watch!!! Even without Isner/Querrey, though, watching Nadal/Lopez in the final would be something else...:)

Outbeyond, thank you very much for the OOP :)

And, to return a favor - here's the link for a video on the doubles semifinal today

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1pb-Ij3kYA

Thanks for that clip!! I'm very excited for Nadal and his seemingly growing interest in doubles...he says it improves his singles matches, and that certainly is understandable. And that he's having a blast doing it with a good buddy who's known for a sunny personality--- very cool!

I felt sorry for Robredo, just hasn't got any weapons to hurt Roddick, of all people. Great win for Soderling. Both semifinal's should be good. Nice to see Ljubicic make a run late on in his career!

Soderling looks amazing. I think he's going to take down Roddick, and then Nadal (likely). His strokes yesterday were just awesome. The whole stadium couldn't believe it.

Nadal's loss means he'll be ranked 4th until after Miami where Murray must retain the title and Nadal to not make the Semi Finals.
