His obituaries can go back to the drawers.

He certainly maintained excellent energy, accuracy and alertness for the full match against a game opponent. I didn't get to see Wawrinka, though, who smashed up poor Gilles.

I expect Nadal to drive Wawrinka up the wall in the end.

Thiem 52% first serving in this match. Rafa showed signs of life with serve in 2nd set. That was the match. More so than the BPs. Thiem choked on the first serve. Averages 67%. Has hit 78% in big match.

I'm loving this new phase in tennis where everyone is the next great player and then they aren't. I wonder how long they can keep this up. How will they manage not to win anything important once the big 3 (or 4) retire? Will they reach finals and implode or not even play the match? I mean, it's easy for them now: winning small tournaments, losing in the bigger ones, nobody's really expecting Beckers or McEnroes at this point, we know they won't overthrow the past greats (it would be more iconoclasm than they could take). But once the big 3 or 4 are retired, someone will have to win the big tournaments.

Well done Thiem.

As much as I like you, you showed in your match against Djokovic in Miami and today against Nadal in MC that you are not good enough.

Sounds about right. I gave him a bit of a pass against Djokovic for all those wasted BP's, but this match against a very beatable Nadal is just not good enough. BP wasting now looks like a bit of a mental problem for him. And he's checked out here at the end.

Not to mention that when he faced BP's himself he was horrible. Often missing a mile long with a FH that didn't even hit the ground until it was stopped by the backstop. Not good enough, especially against this Nadal who played nowhere near well, really.

His actual game doesn't really impress me either. It takes way too long for him to set up on most of his shots. So much so that he pays for it even on clay. He pulls off a highlight reel shot from the BH or FH that everybody drools over once in a blue moon, but overall he's not that impressive.

i didnt watch the match, but i see thiem had somethin like 12 breakpoints in the first set :O what happened ? he really isnt good under pressure is he

You've gotta explain to me how anyone can call Nadal's game "exciting". All he does is retrieve and hope for errors, it boggles the mind how boring it is :)
He does retrieve and hope rather well. Oh and it's exciting to see what modern medicine can acomplish.

Nadal still looking the favourite (to me) to win MC — again, feel free to call me old fashioned (half @Meles).

Who else could be favorite? I think the main question is how close to Djokovic he is for Roland Garros.

(I guess that an argument could be made for Wawrinka being second favorite for RG even though Nadal is favorite for MC, because Wawrinka might have more chance of beating Djokovic and might have a better draw as a top 4 seed. But I don't buy that argument. The bookies don't either. 1. Djokovic, 2. Nadal, 3. Wawrinka. 4. The rest are nowhere).

"Stanimal" vs a resurgent Nadal would be a very intriguing match at RG. I hope that happens at some stage in the tournament.

Is That So?
The Zen master Hakuin was praised by his neighbors as one living a pure life.

A beautiful Japanese girl whose parents owned a food store lived near him. Suddenly, without any warning, her parents discovered she was with child.

This made her parents very angry. She would not confess who the man was, but after much harassment at last named Hakuin.

In great anger the parents went to the master. “Is that so?” was all he would say.

When the child was born, the parents brought it to the Hakuin, who now was viewed as a pariah by the whole village. They demanded that he take care of the child since it was his responsibility. “Is that so?” Hakuin said calmly as he accepted the child.

A year later the girl-mother could stand it no longer. She told her parents the truth – that the real father of the child was a young man who worked in the fishmarket.

The mother and father of the girl at once went to Hakuin to ask his forgiveness, to apologize at length, and to get the child back again.

Hakuin was willing. In yielding the child, all he said was: “Is that so?”
