Congrats to Simona!

So much for Serena being a lock to win the thing.

Not with her movement she wasn't at least not for me.

But was amazing is that she only served one ace, Halep returning really well, but also on the other hand, I don't think that Serena served over 115 mph

Finals match thread deleted. Really? I know it was derailed but really, deleting the Wimbledon WTA final match thread?!

It wasn't derailed. Almost all posts stating the obvious. A heavy, immobile, out of shape, and choking Serena, got beat in another finals by a player who had the had the sense and nerves in executing a game plan. Just the usual handful of butthurt Serena fans running to the mods, as is the norm. LOL.

Well done Halep.

Absolute horrific match by Serena... I expected it to be much more competitive than it was, especially given the fact that Serena beat Halep at the AO while she was no.1.

The only solution for Serena if she ever wants to see no.24 is to play more matches outside of grand slam's, hopefully reach some finals in those and get used to the pressure again, otherwise she will keep on crashing. I know for sure if this was the QF, SF or any other round it wouldn't have been a disaster like it was today.

In the event of a Serena-Halep final it will be almost guaranteed Serena will get her #24. I don't trust Halep to make the match of her life to win the Wimbledon against Serena.
IF (and it's a big IF) Halep makes the final, her only chance to win the title is if Strycova upsets Serena tomorrow. For some reasons, Stycova is one of the few players Halep managed consistently over the years.

On the other hand, if we have Serena-Svitolina final, I think Svitolina has a chance to get her maiden GS. She seems to be one of the players who can handle finals better.
A lot of BS is talked on these boards...

The Australian Open was a surface more suited to Williams, more pace and especially bounce. Simona got it right from the start, keep it low and work Williams, no easy balls. Soon she tired and the power was much reduced. No reason Simona with this mentality can't add to her slam tally. Great day for women's Tennis and surely the end for Williams.

So sjws have the day for now. Can't count the no of Serena related threads deleted out of political correctness. Never mind. Was fun seeing Serena owned.

I thought she was a great fighter, warrior and MOM!!!

Pressure and major nerves, poor movement being overweight still meaning she wasnt getting exactly on balance which leads to more errors, and Halep's defense.

Agree but she was good enough to destroy everyone up to the Semifinals ..... so not sure why all of sudden she starts to make ton of UE's in the final....

Look at her last 3 slam final performances. The pressure of 24 is looming HUGE for her now. I wish she could just relax, but she is clearly putting a lot of pressure on herself when she gets to a slam final now. She did not play the same tennis she did to reach the final in either of her prior 2 slam finals either. And to a minor degree some of the ones before that, despite winning a couple. When you are really nervous you dont move your feet and get set in perfect position, and when movement is a relative weakness for older post maternity Serena to begin with, that leads to her being off a split step and more errors.

She also had an fairly easy draw (so did Halep mind you) with all the upsets, and was playing a tougher opponent than her previous rounds.

There is always pressure... if she does reach 24 slams then there will be even more pressure to break 24 and get 25 slams and be all alone in the history books. so why is just tieing the record so nerve recking ??

Yeah, the serve wasn't there again just the same as USO Final.

Serena said in her press conference that it had taken a lot of effort for her to reach the final.

She was totally out of shape, e.g. :
  1. She lost her breath after 3 games in the second set when she tried to fight back.
  2. She was often jammed.
It got so bad, that Halep didn't even have to hit the corners anymore, also sent some balls down the middle and Serena was either jammed or pressed...

Also the passing defensive shots Simona did (especially her 1HBHs) had some sting on them, similar to what a power hitter would do.

Exactly what I pointed to my wife during the match: Serena wasn't split stepping properly (and I am focused on this as I am heavy myself, 100kgs and trying to split step all the time/better).

It was getting toxic. When that happens it's easier to nuke the thread than to go through and remove all of the posts. People were being called everything from racist/sexist/liberal snowflakes etc.
That was the big problem, likely. Some people thought being called a liberal snowflake was worse than calling others racists and sexists.

Was more the eyebrow. Doc examined him. Some eye drops. He was back playing in 10 minutes. Did not seem to bother him that much afterwards.
I must see the video. I need to examine how the event occurred on what shot. so I can make sure it never happens to me

I've been told to not be afraid of the ball lol

But I once gave someone a black eye from behind the baseline (at the club's team tryouts).

Well, until you see the video, I'll give you a play by play....to the best.of my recollection. Mahut popped up a return that landed around opponents service line. With Mahut standing at baseline, he moved to his right in trying to guess the direction of opponents overhead smash. Unfortunately for Mahut he guessed right. Opponent overhead smash (think they said 120mph) caught a ducking Mahut right on the eyebrow. He dropped like a bag of wet cement.

too bad about the deletion of the thread. tough position. some comments about movement and fitness perhaps are poorly worded and come off more malignant and toxic than intended.
anyways, we live and we learn.
hope we get a good final tomorrow.
Well, you see, somebody (not me) says she MOVES like an elephant and immediately he gets accused of calling her an elephant. This is ridiculous. Last year's thread got absolutely toxic but this time it felt like the Serena fan SJWs preemptively pounced on the haters instead of just ignoring them (which should have been easy to do since saying she moves like an elephant is not remotely racist, not even in the micro sense).

To say she moved like an elephant would imply that she in fact moved... which is false. Her feet were stuck to the ground and her head was seemingly stuck in the clouds. Abysmal performance and pretty worrying given her play in the previous 2 slam finals.

I was very disappointed too. I thought she could do it yesterday but as you say her movement was sorely, sorely lacking. I caught her wobbling off balance with left leg lifted up while tackling a neutral ball on the FH side FFS. Then another time, she was again so imbalanced coming to net she pulled the short backhand long. And then we have people complaining nobody uses similes like elephant for Fed's movement. But well, Fed has simply slowed down but he is still a gazelle, just a senior gazelle. He moved his feet beautifully on Friday. Serena didn't. Actually her movement has been lacking for a few years now (as in, she would hit shots off all sorts of ugly stances without getting into a good position) but she was getting away with it with her sheer strokemaking and physicality. After her return post pregnancy, this is costing her heavily. The physicality of old is gone though she still has the strokes. She just can't produce remotely the same power off those fugly positions anymore.

I agree her physicality is affecting her movement now, but for me it's more about her mental game. Ever since coming back after pregnancy she has lost that warrior spirit she used to have. Serena is much more fragile and nervy now than she was before. I think the "motherly" instincts have actually hurt her game rather than help it.

We saw she moved just fine in the semifinal when she was relaxed. Given it was a weaker opponent and smaller occasion, but that indicates that when her head isn't in the game, her feet freeze, and she starts spraying errors. To me her performance against Halep was less physical and more mental, though both played a role.

Possible. I think it's a little different though related to her new role. She probably wants to pass Court and get done with it and be with baby. This is causing her to get too invested in slam finals and not play freely. This time, there was a resigned acceptance I have never seen from Serena. It's as if she knew she wasn't going to be a match for Halep as long as the latter came out and played her A game. IDK, I think the end may be near if she doesn't win USO as well.

Serena was more worried about getting thru this final without blowing a gasket, than she was on winning.

Borderline obese, she can still win slams. Lose about 15-20 pounds. Get the cardio back. Nadal and Djokovic were head cases a few years back, and were able to comeback and win slams. With the WTA....down.....her only real opponent is herself.

This is true. We saw hints of it when she was trying to tie #18 and #22, but post-pregnancy she hasn't been able to cope with the pressure in the same way. Her first and maybe second slam final performances since coming back could be excused due to her time off and whatnot, but her bizarre loss in Australia and her dismal performance at Wimbledon tell me her mental strength has taken a big hit.

Playing more matches isn't going to happen with her dodgy knee, I'll be surprised if she even makes it to the US Open final.

How is this borderline obese out of curiosity? Looks pretty good to me, she was borderline obese with that catsuit last year but this is good.
