Generally I would like to have such a clean and sharp forehand in the next 3 sets won by Jannik.

The speeds generated by Jannik with the forehand are incredible, as soon as it works, the opponent is in big trouble!!!

I'm surprised Daniil had a crisis in his serve in the 3rd set, losing 6:4, if he was to lose this set, at least in the tie break...

Daniil's biggest mistake today was too confident belief in his victory, Jannik, although terrified, was able to calm down and take over and started dominating in the next sets.

As long as there is no championship ball, you generally need to have a lot of humility and self-control, but Daniil d show that he had already won, Jannik looked like a child on his first day in kindergarten.

Fortunately, after two hopeless sets, Jannik started playing like Novak, and the roles began to reverse.

At the beginning, what Jannik lacked most was courage and faith in victory, but then he started to play more bravely and believed in victory!!!

Yeah, this is a great point. If Medvedev had closed the match out in the third set just imagine how crushed Zverev would have been. At least this result may be slightly less crushing for the German.

Couple of things. First, had Medvedev won, the two winners of this AO will be from countries called “World” without flags.

Second, a grand slam tournament is not as enjoyable without you, all. It had been a pleasure. I will see you all after the clay season.

There was a thread a few months ago asking if David Ferrer would be a multiple French Open champion if he was at his peak in the past few years, and I remember answering that he would have been as all it takes to beat the 90s generation is the will to keep going and not give up.

The 80s generation had that ability, and it seems that the 2000s generation does as well (or at least Sinner and Alcaraz anyhow).

I think this is it for the 90s gang, they blew their chances and now they're being surpassed.

How can you call yourself a journalist and compare the games of Hewitt to Carlos, and Fed to Jannik? Dumb media.

Having said that, I think Jannik is ready for at least one more slam this year. The much delayed race between Raz and the older Sinner is finally on.

But I should NOT forget Djokovic as the man can easily repeat a 2023 and win the remaining slams.

I'm excited for the rest of the season.

Sinner has been able to solve the problem that was plaguing him of constantly (well, often enough) having to withdraw from tournaments early due to illness and injuries, which was harming his climb up the rankings. I wonder if he and his team figured out how to solve this problem or if it just went away on its own for him?

He definetly got stronger this year, also playing better in every aspect of the Game

so true, when carlos won one slam they said he was another chang, when he won the second he was hewiit, but now sinner wins one and he is federer lol, comparing hewiit and federer to carlos and sinner is one of the dumbest things i heard

Such bait-comparisons (got some 1.5k hits) irk me both as a Carlos fan and even more as a Federer fan.

Alcaraz will win a slam this year if I were to put my money on anything. I can't wait for him to get upgraded to the next Murray category already. Meanwhile Sinner will continue being the next Federer because of course, he's a Tennis player born in August.

This magnificent win of Sinner's isn't to put down the other generational (and younger) phenom that Alcaraz is. Just leaves one with a sour taste in the mouth.

The press - and people in general - love these parallels, even when they don't make sense. Remember how Alcaraz was promoted at the new Nadal, because he's from Spain, even though their games are now actually similar at all?

Pretty low IQ takes too these. People have a massive hardon for parallels as the other person said, even when his game is absolutely nothing like that of Rafa's or Lleyton's for that matter.

I saw someone on Twitter concur with the absurd take in the tweet above stating that Jannik reminds them of Federer because he ... doesn't grunt.

I think that Alcaraz is a classy guy, and it is nice to see the Bromance between him and Sinner.

However, I could see several reasons why people would dislike him:
- he grunts pretty loudly on court. I think that’s a big one. The grunts do feel a little over the top to me, even given the standards we have seen.
– he’s quite ebullient on court. He smiles a lot when winning and his celebrations could come across as arrogant, especially if he’s beating your favorite players. I tend to think this is just his natural love the game spilling over and he may also tone it down with time. But I could see how people would get annoyed.
- he plays a ridiculous level of defense. Granted, he also has fantastic offense, but for example, as a fed fan, who’s been scarred by Rafa impossible gets over the years, seeing someone return shots into the court over and over again gets tiring.

I'll give you the grunting. As a Fed fan, I do live his attacking play though. I don't think it's like Nadal, but I think in today's game you need insane defense also to stay at the top. (Which Fed could also do pretty well at the height of his powers TBF.

Just finished watching replay. Sinner just a little fresher mentally and physically at the end. Med played well the last 3 sets, except for the 5th set serving at 2-3. Bad shot, then came to the net a couple times on weak approaches. Sinner a little nervous serving for the match at 30-0, choked a couple points, but pulled it together and finished strong. Very good match.

What a win by Jannik! Top drawer stuff! In one fell swoop sweeping away doubts about his mental and physical capacity to excel in 5 setters, and establishing that he has the fortitude to ride the storm and prevail. And he has done it at the first time of asking. Bravo. I anticipate that this will be a springboard to an outstanding season for him, bringing much needed competition at the top of the game.

Superb effort from Daniil. I am not generally a fan of his game, but his strategy and its execution (in the first 2 sets in particular) was excellent. He displayed variety and honed his energy towards playing out of his comfort zone, which was impressive. I agree with the assessment that his reserves began to flag as the match went on, given the challenging previous rounds. Commiserations to Daniil, but he was simply outplayed when it mattered in the latter stages.

This is an excellent start to the season, resonating a sense of new beginnings. With Novak ousted from his throne at the AO, and another younger generation star winning a GS, there is a freshness and excitement to the tour that I for one have looked forward to. Given that it is an Olympic Games year too, there is an added dimension to the sense of excitement. Looking forward to some great contests ahead!

Got up this morning and immediately watched my recording of the championship match. Medvedev put up an incredible effort, at first totally defying that he had played three 5-setters already. His strategy to come out very aggressive and end the match as quickly as possible to save his body worked as he took the first 2 sets with incredible serving and shortening points. But you could see his energy gradually waning in the third and fourth sets as his forehand and backhand speeds diminished and his first serve tanked. By the fifth, a record-breaking 31st set ever played in a slam, Medvedev was on fumes. Sinner has cramped in the past, but his fitness held, and he won his first slam, probably one of many. That was two nice, gracious speeches from Medvedev and Sinner. I especially liked Sinner thanking his parents for NOT putting too much pressure on him considering how many overbearing tennis parents there have been (looking at you, Mr. Tsitsipas). This should silence Sinner’s many critics here as he cements his place as a legitimate rival to Alcaraz for the best of this generation.

Sinner is a groundstroke machine. A constant barrage of heavy balls that gradually do more damage.

Alcaraz is more like a tornado on court, while Sinner is a battering ram.
