Cornet over Mertens in straights.
Big fan of Cornet! She is very hungry to boost her rankings so she doe not have to go through qualifying! I don't blame her for that! Currently ranked 59! She needs to go to like 45 to get in any MD tournament she want to play in!

Ash Barty is having a blast out there. For those who doesn't like her: Boo hoo!
I wonder if players like Ash attend smaller event (Still WTA 500) to just enjoy competing with less stress.

Anisimova getting started for the final match in Charleston today, playing Shelby Rogers.

Edit: Amanda broken in the first service game of the match.

Oh that's right, it's the WTA. Amanda breaks back, 1-1. Some amazing looking winners this game. Nice.

And just like that, she's up serving at 5-1.

Boom, 24 minute breadstick that included getting broken in her first service game :D

Sloane Stephens wins the rematch of the 2017 US Open final beating Keys 6-4 6-4.

She knocks out the defending champion.

That’s Sloane’s first top 20 win since beating #19 Muguruza way back at the 2019 French Open(!!)

Was meant to be posted a while back..

Amanda is a total head case in this match. She's started crying a few times on court, missed easy shots, totally gives up on some games, got a point deducted for saying she was going to the bathroom but then didn't go. When her game is on, she's clearly better than Shelby, but she's a mess right now.

I saw a bit of the Badosa-Bencic match yesterday between two former RG junior champions. Badosa really should have record an easier straight sets win, imploded during the 2nd set but recovered to win the 3rd set easily. Bencic clearly struggles on clay, she isn't a strong defender and her footwork on the surface is suspect. .

Anisimova gives Kenin and Putinseva a run for their money in the “easiest to root against”department.

didn't realize she was like this until last night. Receiving a point a penalty for not going to the bathroom was classic. in addition, her comment to Shelby after the second set.

Wait...is Sloane getting motivated? I hope so. She's probably my fave WTA player but she doesn't give me much to cheer for.

What was her comment after the second set?
I turned it on in the 3rd, my god what a mess. I heard after the match Shelby said, "hope you feel better" which was nice of her. Shelby has lost a TON of weight and it's made a big difference in her game.

according to the commentators, it was asarcastic good set to Shelby. Shelby looked at her twice afterwards walking to the chair. the commentators were embarrassed by her behavior. Shelby has come a long way.

Hopefully Muguruza's injury problems aren't too serious, and she's fine for Madrid in a couple of weeks.

What happened to her this time?

An injury to her left leg / knee I think. Hopefully it’s not too serious and she retired to avoid aggravating it.

She has played a lot of matches already this season, and she could probably do with a few extra days to rest-up and recharge before the European clay court events.

In terms of players retiring when holding a clear lead, other examples that sprung to mind were Groenefeld when leading Sharapova 6-1 4-2 in Moscow in 2005, and Wozniacki when leading Kremer 7-5 5-0 in Luxembourg in 2009.

Wozniacki retired as she wouldn’t have been able to play her next round match, so she allowed Kremer to take her place instead and wanted to recover in time for her first ever YEC appearance. The fact that her father told her to play another couple of games and then retire during a changeover, didn’t go unnoticed and led to a WTA investigation.
