I'm amazed that Cilic could barely hold serve. I know his serve used to be quite shaky but he improved it somewhat over the last couple of years so that it became at least a quite good serve (with the help of Goran). It was nothing today for Djokovic, though.

Only 45% 1st serves in, and I think he missed most of the really big serves, the ones he got in were mostly around 115-120 mph or so.

OMG I'm so happy.:) Novak becomes only the 3rd player in the Open era to reach all 4 slam finals in a season, equals Sampras with 18 major finals and makes his 11th successive final of the year, the same as Federer did in 2006. Come on haters, you might not like him but you've gotta respect that level of consistency.

We do (not a hater though)

Good stuff. BUT, weak youngsters is a fact.

well we now know he WAS injured, so..

Tbh, I don't think it matters that much. Novak has creamed Cilic before when he wasn't injured at all. He lost 4, 4, and 4 at Wimbledon most recently. Basically, even if he can give 100% he still gets smoked.

Credit to Marin as well btw. He was nowhere near his best today but it was still a pretty solid defense of his title and I wish him all the best for the rest of the year.

oh come on cilic was sh*t ...

winning only 3 games with that serve ?

novak was playing nearly as well in the QF at wimbledon, but cilic made it respectable there ....

Of course Cilic could've done better, but I wouldn't give him a failing grade here. One thing I will say is that he should've tried to vary his serve more. Slice out wide, surprise body serves here and there, etc.

I would just love for one of these guys to do the on court interview and be like i was farking awesome and my opponent sucked balls.

He held serve twice in the match... Though Novak should be at least a little concerned that he got broken by this Cilic.

And you did show him respect by predicting a win from Cilic in 4 sets ;)

Good stuff from our world number one. But job is not done yet, still one more match to go. Keep your zen, keep your focus, and you will come out victorious!

Bad luck to Cilic for his ankle issues but he still made a very valiant effort on his title defense.

Wilander said like this: "I'd hit low skidding slices to him if Novak were in this mode. His extreme grip is tough on low skidding balls".

What the! I agree with Mats!

He's so annoyingly likeable. I want to dislike him because he just wins everything and makes it a bit boring, but he just comes across so well all the time.

It's true, even I'm starting to warm to him. The effect of fatherhood making him relax a bit more about a silly game? Leading to serenity and zoning?

Props to Nole for being a gracious winner. No celebration no nothin', just a head down stroll to the net with a classy handshake. He's always been a great loser and it's good to see him become a gracious and mature winner.

I told you,,,,,now Cilic is making the Ankle injury as excuse now....... Cilic is saying he only lost because of Ankle injury...

Please, you are becoming more of a wet blanket than a certain other Djokovic fan....

Just what do you have to do to score a fail? Not win a point?

"You're only as good as your second serve"
And Cilic's was crap, 22%.

I keep on saying Nole was just good enough, but he didn't zone, peaked or did anything spectacular at all.

sorry, but I disagree ...absolute fail grade from me ...just like delpo at AO 2009 vs fed ...( and that was somewhat excusable given his inexperience at that time )

If he wins on Sunday that will be his second 3-slam year, a very rare thing in men's tennis. A huge amount if on the line. At this moment I have to pick Novak as the most likely champion. But we'll know for sure in two more days. ;)

Are you adjusting for the injury?

Because I'm not sure how a 0, 1 & 2 beatdown from Novak who didn't even have to hit 2nd gear through the entire match qualifies for anything better than a massive failing grade.

Can't fault him for that really, any player would have had his serve broken if he fell asleep during the match. He woke up right away in the next game so no harm done.
It's a remarkable tribute to Novak's mental strength that he managed to maintain such a high quality of play despite his opponent playing so poorly.

Djoker fans need to realize this: had Nole behaved as he did tonight back in 2007-2011, he would have earned a TON more fans. We all know how he would have behaved in this match back then-- shirt ripping, gorilla dance and all the rest of that crap. It pissed off millions of tennis fans.

He's worked hard to redeem himself on court, one of the few guys besides Andre who actually managed to pull that off. +10 tonight, Nole.

Cilic was clearly injured. Kudos to him for playing until the end.
This would explain the play. I did not for a moment expect Cilic to win because this is a bad matchup for him but never expected such a passive display from him either.
