Did Kei ever beat Novak at a slam at 30 years of age after a 4 hour match in the preceding round?

Please, Nishikori will be a w/o barring aneurysm on Djokovic's end. And you know it.
Niki has better stamina than Cilic, If Cilic would’ve won he would’ve given a Djokovic a fight for one set and a half maybe two sets , Niki Can probably still hold another 5 setter

Inb4 USO 14 repeat

he had 2 tough 5-setters (Raonic and Wawrinka) before he beat Djoko in USO 14.

this has been his only tough match here so far.

Nishi's problem ain't exhaustion per se, its more injuries/being susceptible to them.
Exhaustion, injury, whatever. Same outcome.
Let's go Novak:p

Kei will be out in 3 sets barring a spontaneous mass collapse from Novak (which won't happen). Bet on it.

Spectacular match. So happy to see Kei doing well. Wish he could win the whole thing.

Technically he still can since he's still alive in the draw. ;)

Of course, I'm sure you meant he probably won't win it since in all likelihood he'll have to go through Djokovic in the semis and then Rafa/Delpo in the final, should he reach the final.

Despite being a 5 set match, Nishikori did a lot less running here compared to his 3rd round. Points were a lot shorter here so it shouldn't be as taxing for him. Should be fine physically for semis.

Exactly. That is why I don't like Cilic. I mean for all his talent, the stuff between his ears is seriously lacking. He is so WEAK in the mental department. Like this match against Kei, Cilic should have never lost. But some ridiculous errors and chokes.

As a fan of Cilic, this is soooo frustrating!
He can play beautifully, ate Nishikori alive, but this happen all the time.

Right. I have quite the suspicion that some of his fans ITT are actually Djokovic fans. And to them I do congratulate because this guy will be minced meat in the semi, like he would have been today if Cilic had half a brain between his ears.

I'm a fan of both.
South Slavs are my kinda men lol.

Wow, never try to challenge Nishikori in a deciding set! Kei wins the Battle of the Chokers, makes his 3rd semi-final at the US Open (prev 2014, 2016) and finally gains revenge on Cilic for his loss to him in the 2014 final.

For Cilic, this is a heartbreaker. A winnable match for him but undone by choking away valuable opportunities and leads at crucial moments. He won't sleep easily tonight.

Missed all of this one. For sure will watch later on. I knew Cilic came out hot and haven't read the thread or anything else, but looking at the score it must have been a hell of a match. Good to hear Nishikori is playing good again.

Are you serious? Do you guys use HOPE as a strategy?
If you were making a decision, would you base it out of hope (or what you want should happen) than out of probability and rationality?

Kei beat Novak once in 2011 and once in 2014. He hasn't beaten Novak in 4 years and 10 matches.]
The head 2 head is 2-14.

Does lightning fall twice? If you were betting for your life, who would you bet on?
I am not saying Kei will likely defeat Djokovic in the semifinal (assume Djokovic will win tonight), but you apparently underestimate his chance. Cilic is a mental midget, never defeating an ATG player convincingly in slams, but Kei is not. Not to mention he once upset Djokovic in USO.

At 62 42 he just lost it - the UEs just started pouring out. I quit after the 3rd set off the DVR - pathetic. He couldn’t get 80-something mph 2nd serves in play.

Happy for Nishikori - great comeback from his injury and a major SF - even if he does get pummeled by Djokovic is still a great result. But that’s an early Xmas present.

So it was Cilic going cold? I haven't seen any of it.

His win over Federer at 2014 US Open was pretty convincing.

Kei can beat Novak in next round but he will need his forehand to do it. his best shot backhand alone won't be enough. One thing I noticed was Since he switched to that Luxilon Element string, he is having trouble controlling his forehand with so much power in that string...
I'd love to see it.:D Wish you were around when players switched from gut to Poly. I'd love to know when every player of note made the switch.:p

close match but nothing compared to the opportunity that khachanov and thiem missed

i think their losses were way worse than cilic today

It's actually a really bad sign that none of these younger players can get the job done, this US Open was the time, and they've all fallen down. Marat Safin was right.
Thiem should be angry at himself and ropable, he should have a sense of entitlement, that that was HIS match. But he'll be circle-jerking with his team and the media and on instagram about how wonderful that defeat was.

Cilic up 6/4 4/2, completely gives it away with a handful of unforced errors and loses the next six games. 3rd set TB, up 4-3 with the mini break, consecutive DFs. His 2nd serve was so tentative, 85 mph 2nd serve comfortably dispatched for the 3rd set. Such a scrappy match today.

I almost feel like I wanted chili man to face Djokovic of course I want Yoko to win because I know chili always craps the bed and is mentally weak maybe Nishikori will physically break down in the semi-final I know it's going to be in the mid-70s so it's not going to be hot

but seriously, i don't understand what the problem with cilic actually is

is he just a serial choker with terrible nerves/anxiety?

why not hire a crew of sports psychologists, therapists or whatever will help him get his mentality sorted

I'm pretty sure he (And most top professional players) has a psychologist (Or a team). His wife also from psychology major.
Maybe he has anxiety disorder but wouldn't disclose it publicly.

You can clearly see when he get nervy on court.

Oh I called it too. But I am still amazed at how it went down. Up a set, up a break, and just begins raining UEs utterly unprovoked. Unreal.
I’m still in shock - and disgust (picked Cilic in the Tennis Channel Racquet Bracket, trying to win figuring the big 3 would get 95% of the votes - and was starting to believe).

His FH literally dropped to Benoit Paire level. Unbelievable. I’m no a huge believer in Sports Psychologists - but might be worth a try for him. No excuse to blow the CA match with Nadal or this one.
