I wanted to create a thread to discuss the current Race to London, and figured we might as well make it a tournament thread at this point.

So two places are still available, with 11 players still able to qualify in principle.

We have a likely AdM - RBA match in Paris R2, which will knock out one of them from the race.

As for R3, Berrettini and Khachanov are seeded to meet as are Zverev and Fognini. The remaining eights of the bracket each have one qualified player and one contender, so the latter are spread pretty evenly along the Paris draw.

So, to delve down a little bit more closely:

AdM, Isner, Khachanov and Wawrinka will have to win the tournament to have any chance of qualifying.

Schwartzman and Fognini need to at least reach the final.

Goffin and Monfils need the SF.

Bautista Agut can potentially overtake Berrettini with "only" a QF appearance, but may need to beat both AdM and Tsitsipas to get there. If Berrettini wins his first match against Tsonga/Rublev, RBA would also need at least a SF appearance (which likely means winning a QF against Djokovic).

Zverev, despite his bad performance in Basel, is looking pretty secure. Any of the other contenders would need a strong run to overtake him (SF for Berrettini and RBA, at least final for the others), and for this to happen for two players in this draw appears quite unlikely.

Berrettini is in pole position, but sitting in 8th place he is vulnerable to a surprise run by one of his rivals for qualification.

Big day for London qualification coming. All of the remaining contenders in action bar Zverev, who is already in R16. We'll lose at least one, with the AdM v RBA match.

But many of the contenders face tough matches. Can Tsonga use home advantage to beat Berrettini, who is currently in eighth? That might make things quite interesting.

Why are you creating a thread about the ATP finals when the tournament has not even started?

Just like threads about matches that have not started are usually deleted, threads about tournaments which have not started should be typically deleted.

Because the top 8 players haven't been decided yet. Each lost/win in Paris will decide who qualifies for the last two spots, it's interesting as Paris progresses.

Yeah Monfils victory and Berrettini SF the only way Zverev could miss it I believe. Pretty unlikely TBF.

i think i made a mistake again
Zverev is qualified No matter what happens

Berrettini & Monfils are in the same half And both must reach the final to surpass him so it is Impossible

Despite the loss Berrettini has still a chance unless Monfils reachs the SF, Wawrinka or de Minaur wins the title

But Wawrinka has Nadal & de minaur has Tsitsipas tomorrow.
Monfils is the main threat

I think Berrettini could have passed Zverev with semi. But it's academic now that he is out - Sascha definitely in.

Monfils with a realistic chance to knock Berrettini off #8 spot, will overtake him with SF appearance. Wawrinka and AdM with outside chances, need to win the title (and Monfils not to go too far to be out of reach).

I answered that question in the second post on the thread - did think about it before doing so.

Certainly we've had GS discussion threads some weeks before that them became the main tournament thread. It's not threads about matches that haven't started yet that get deleted I believe, but those that aren't set to happen yet (eg if I created a Nadal-Djoko final thread for Paris now).

Berrettini qualifies if de Minaur or Wawrinka doesnt win Paris or Monfils doesnt reach the SF

Monfils qualifies if he reachs the SF & Wawrinka doesnt win Paris

Wawrinka qualifies if he wins Paris & Monfils doesnt reach the QF

De Minaur qualifies if he wins Paris, Monfils doesnt reach the SF

I don't think that's quite right.

Monfils qualifies if he reaches the final, OR reached the SF & Wawrinka doesnt win Paris

Wawrinka qualifies if he wins Paris & Monfils doesnt reach the final.

AdM qualifies if he wins and Monfils doesn't make semis. Unless I've missed something.

Monfils has to beat Albot and Garin to make ATP Finals? That actually sounds doable, so watch it not happen smh.

And then the was one ... Gurufils now favourite for the final spot ?! Clownfils may have something to say about that though!

A resplendent Shapo awaits Monfils should he make it by the very pesky Albot. That will be a rough match, but Paris on his side:
35/2019 R32 US Open Hard Gael Monfils Denis Shapovalov 6-7(5) 7-6(4) 6-4 6-7(6) 6-3

Guru v Shapo QF will decide the final qualifier tomorrow - Monfils or Berrettini?

Should Monfils make the final, he'll even rise to #7, one place below his career-high ranking.

So, apart from the final place, we now know what the groups can look like - all the rankings from 1-6 can no longer change. So each group will have:

Nadal OR Djokovic
Federer OR Medvedev
Tsitsipas OR Thiem
Zverev OR Monfils/Berrettini

What would be the hardest group?

Nadal v Djokovic seems pretty even at the moment; Djokovic the favourite on this surface, but Nadal seemingly the fresher at the moment. This impression may change should one of them lose early in Paris.

Federer v Medvedev: probably Fed is the one people would avoid, given that Medvedev has just had a bit of a letdown in Paris. But we also know that Roger can have his let-downs. So not too much in between them.

Tsitsipas-Thiem: Tsitsipas has been in better form.

Zverev - final qualifier: Sascha is the defending champion and knows what it's all about. His form hasn't been particularly great this year, however.

So I guess my candidate for the group of death would be:

Djokovic
Federer
Tsitsipas
Zverev

Not too much in it though - the groups are likely to be pretty even. I'm going to see the first match on the Sunday with my son, and this line-up looking pretty good.

So, I guess with the Sunday afternoon slot we'll have a 50% chance of seeing one of the top 3 in action. If not, we may see Medvedev v Tsitsipas, which is intriguing for all its own reasons. :-D

Or it could be Med v Thiem. Which is probably the least exciting possibility - but still a match between this year's "other" (non-big 3) GS finalists, and potential future GS champions.

Not bad really.

How in the hell is Tsitsipas in better form than Thiem? You could argue that he's in good form, but better than the guy that just won two 500s in the last 4 weeks?

Ok, I did forget that Thiem actually beat Tsitsipas in the China final. And he did finally win his home tournament.

But then, in the big tournaments, Shanghai & Paris, Thiem has bombed out before the QF. Tsitsipas made the semis in Shanghai, beating Djokovic. He lost to Fed in the Basel SF which has happened to many before him. So I would argue at least that Tsits has been more consistent in recent weeks, certainly on the big stage. But I suppose there isn't much in it (which I did also say).

With the format, imbalanced groups ultimately work out.

If you have a tough group, you can have easy semi final.

If you have a Nadal USO draw for round robin, then be prepared for a tough SF.

I would like

Djok, Fed,Thiem and Zverev. Want Fed to get some revenge in the group.

Nadal, Med, Thiem and Monfils in the other - cake walk for Nadal to top the group

We get a Fedal SF and Djoker-Thiem SF

Fed-DJoker to decide the final winner.
