I wish Goffin wasn't injured, he would of won this by now.

This is some poor play from Goffin, watching crap play against an injured opponent is definitely a pet peeve of mine when it comes to tennis.

How injured is Nadal btw? Are you guys just saying this because he's playing poorly, or is his movement actually hampered?

There's always some who blame a poor Nadal performance on injury so just wondering.

Nadal simply will not go away, he is hurt, a break down, but still fighting, he still wants it.

This match is once again proving why 2017 has been one of the poorest years in tennis history. The two former greats have taken advantage of the absence of the best player in the world and also the absence of last year's #1. But the standard of tennis has been appalling all season.

Absolute circus show.
Clown Goffin cant even get it done against a legged Nadal on a fast indoor HC

Really brave performance so far from Goffin, obviously struggling with that taped up knee.

4-3, Nadal still one break down. This is far from over. Nadal could still pull the Houdini act here.

This is hilarious. Not epic by any means, simply hilarious - if Rafa breaks again, that will just about sum things up.

Truth is, no one knows how much of a bad performance by Nadal is due to his knee, this surface or just playing bad.
For me it looks like he is bothered by the knee issue enough to influence his play...

Well, why couldn't Nadal hold serve like that earlier? Why did he lose it twice? Really, no excuses. He is clearly not 100% healthy (he is not running for a lot of balls) but still. He needed to hold serve like that earlier. Now Goffin just needs 2 holds of serve to win.

I'm just memeing btw, he does look injured. However I thought he said himself he was 100 % going into this? With #1 secured already I was inclined to believe him.

Holy smokes only just joined the match, 4 MPs saved but Goffin still ahead in the decider?! Someone kindly please give me a breakdown of what happened

Omfg, Nadal, WITHDRAW ALREADY!!! Clearly injured, playing like a world number 200 for the whole match but two games, and yet keeps playing to make the injury worse.

Can't quantify how injured he is, impossible to do that. He's able to run, put it that way, but he's in discomfort and I would imagine his movement is hampered. Bit like Fed earlier this year really.

Atleast because of this Nadal is giving us atleast one entertaining match before this tournament turns into an absolute Fed-istival

Nadal will definitely pull out of the tournament if he loses this match.

I think "if he loses" are the key words. He's still playing out there, and coincidentally enough he's playing better when he knows he's within striking distance. He's not 100% that much is clear, but he's also doing the typical "injured tennis player" routine (which he's quite good at if I'm brutally honest). .

Nadal needs to target the forehand side of Goffin here.

Well Goffin with a taped up injured knee has beaten #1 Nadal!

He always sucks on this surface, but it's pretty clear he's injured. He sucks EXTRA bad right now.

At this point, I think Rod Laver himself could come on court and beat both guys.

Only a Djokovic fan can see something positive about Nadal in this match.
Plenty of positives for me.
1. This is the most entertaining version of Nadal since 2013.
2. Even Nadal will realize now that he will have to withdraw (thank God), and call it a season

Congratz to Goffin on the well deserved win.
About Nadal-no idea how weak the tour is if this guy who can't beat Goffin is a world number one. I really hope he withdraws.

Look at this guy Toni Nadal and the hilarity over here :

"I've heard some people saying that the draw is in our favor, but I don't see it that way at all," Toni said of Rafa's group that includes David Goffin, Dominic Thiem and Grigor Dimitrov. "Specifically, I would have preferred if Dimitrov wasn't in our group altogether, but we'll have to deal with the draw we've been dealt. In all honesty, every match will have its own complications."

jeez, firstly, they've got a clearly easier half ..

well you wouldn't like Goffin in Nadal's group either, would you ?

Nadal would get a spanking if he faced fed in the final.

It'd be even better if he faced Federer in the semi-finals. Federer v Zverev (or perhaps Federer v Sock) in the final would probably be more interesting than Federer v Nadal. (Dimitrov's record against Federer is pretty dismal, so it's hard to expect much from a Federer v Dimitrov final).

Congrats to Goffin on his first victory against Rafa, nice effort and he survived a great challenge at the end.

Regarding Nadal, you simply cannot finish him off without giving absolutely everything you have. I remember one interview with Davydenko, I think it was after the Shanghai final, when a journalist asked him what was your strategy against Nadal, he responded "there was no strategy, it was a fight for every point". He summed it up perfectly.

Congratulations to Goffin. Such a hard fought win; he totally deserves it, playing bravely. All the commies are doubting we will see Rafa again this week. Sad to say but I hope so as well.

Goffin was clearly injured, but managed to pull through against the worlds number one. Classy performance, should of won it easier. Nadal really needs to serve better, was too predictable and not taking advantage. 2 aces the whole game.

Havent heard this many excuses after a loss (watching sky spots). This peter guy sounds like serena after a loss

Goffin has certainly choked at times, but I actually don't think that's the story of this match. He's battled past his 2 serious chokes in this match, Nadal has just been ridiculous when down MPs. Essentially, Goffin is not getting that last slice of luck that he needs, which is a Nadal miss on MP.

Or an ace! That works too.

Hope those people who keep giving **** about Fed skipping the clay season for his body finally understand because this is what happens if you overplay.
Federer had no injuries and was in AMAZING form, his best since 2007. I'm sure he would have won a few clay masters titles, maybe even RG.
Nadal on the other hand was in TERRIBLE form in Paris and is injured, and I said from the beginning that he should withdraw. But no. Nadal is too stupid to do that.

Was it a good match?
A great one. Goffin had the game to put Nadal under all sort of pressure on these courts and finally finished him off. Nadal save triple match point on his serve at end of 2nd and was resplendent in the breaker. WTF off to a great, great start in group B.

Nadal definitely took some damage on his knee, but with a day off we'll just have to wait and see if the knee hangs in there. It did not cost him badly in this match, but it took a pounding. Excellent baseline domination match and Nadal almost found a way to stop Goffin playing some of his best. Goffin's serve caved under pressure at quite a few points in the match, but not on his serve game for the match.:p

It must suck for Federer sometimes this year, having literally no-one else to pick up some slack for him with Nadal occasionally. Everyone else just lies down for Rafa or can't close, so it always falls to 36yo Fed to do the job. And he can't play a full calendar at this level any more, so whenever he's not there Nadal gets the trophy, unchallenged.

Yeah, I wonder which tournament you're referring to here? The USO, maybe? :D

Nadal just said in the press conference that he's withdrawing.

Correct move for Nadal. Rest up, heal, and recover for the AO.

If Federer can do it for Davis Cup... Nadal can do it for the AO.

Good of Nadal to give the exhibition a go though really. I mean, if he really didn't value the tournament at all he wouldn't have even played his opening match, no?

"I'm off."

Rafa just said in his presser that he's off for the season, that he didn't enjoy the match and intended to pull out after it's over, win or lose. He wasn't ready for this, and didn't know if he would be able to recover in time (for next year). He also said he fighted a lot for this match because it's the final match of his season and he wanted to give back to his fans.

So if Federer had played a few matches in Paris...... We may have had a new no.1 by Sunday?

Theoretically yes, but I don't think Federer would've done at all good in Paris tbh. Easy draw yes, but he's even older than Nadal, and said after the Basel final that his body needed a break.

  1. Nadal says he knew he was pulling out during the match because he was in pain & wasnt enjoying it: ”After the year I've had, I don't deserve to feel like that on court for 2 more days”

  2. Nadal: It's a miracle i was this close in the score.

  3. Nadal: I am off. My season is finished!
........

so false statement to say he decided before the match
