rafa will beat federer. serving issues sorted. the surface is fairly medium speed. over the match, rafa will grind fed's backhand down to pulp.

i saw some of the highlights, the surface is very much similar to clay, with good topspin and high bounce

Isn't the bounce a lot lower at night?

I'd have thought the humidity and air temp change would affect the speed of the ball through the air more, rather than influence the bounce of the ball at night on this surface. But I've not witnessed the courts live to know whether this is the case.

I know and agree, that's exactly what I was trying to say.

I strongly disagree with the last part. There is no ********* on here worse than Breakpoint, Ralph or Queenseles. Period.

Exsqueeze me? Baking powder? Well, you know what they say; there's only one thing worse than being talked about...

I loves ya MichaelNadal :)

Forecast: "Mostly cloudy in the morning then becoming partly sunny. Chance of showers and thunderstorms...then slight chance of showers. Highs in the mid 80s. West winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 30 percent."

-> Slow conditions

Fed in a quick 2 (if hes in good form) or Nadal in 3.

Its at 4:30 am my time. Any point my getting up at that time to see it ?
Or Should i just catch a stripped down replay at 8 am ? If its straight sets they show the whole match, if its 3 sets they start at end of first set.

I just corrected that. my TV listing showed 2:30am start of night telecast... Checked the OOP. Đoković is at 10:30pm here (1 pm Miami) and Roger is at 4:30 am (7 pm Miami). So i will catch the first set of Joker live, and see Roger being schooled over breakfast (replay).

If by 'being schooled' you mean winning 6-3 6-4, then yes. ;)

The only thing that worries me is that Roger, subconsciously, will go easy on his buddy Rafael, now that the Spaniard is in such a fragile mental state after his Djokovic collapse and his Berdych near-collapse. A severe beating here at the hands of the Maestro could send the Matador over the edge. Vamos!

I hope Nadal wins this one, for the sake of reasserting himself as the top dog in tennis.

The top dog in tennis is Nole right now.

I even think Novak played better at times in 2008

Oh, no doubt. Nole's serve was better in 2008. BUT Fed and Nadal were better in 2008, so no Nole domination. Since now Fedal are not as good as in 2008, Nole domination can happen. Something he couldn't do in 2008 because Fedal were still too good for him. Now Nole can take advantage of 2011 weaker Fedal and dominate.

Federer is in the same phase of his career as Tiger and Schumacher are in theirs, even if in Tiger's case it isnt as age related.

Disagree. Federer is right now where Schumacher was in 2006... Good but not good enough to be #1.... For Federer to be where Schumacher is in 2011, he would have to continue playing tennis until he is over 35...

Losing to Anderson in Miami last year had little to do with Novak. I don't think Fed is that much worse than in 08. Maybe a little. Don't see him losing to Stepanek on clay this year though.

Oh, but Fed has not reached a slam final in a year... In 2008, he reached 3 slam finals. He was better at the slams in 2008.

“I think in the beginning, early on in my career when I became the World No. 1, I didn't really have that rival, and I was very happy about it,” said Federer. “I was just able to win, win, win, and dominate. That was quite incredible.

[...]

“So in the beginning I guess I struggled to embrace the rivalry I had with Rafa. Only later on I was able to say this is actually quite cool. Sleeveless, pirate pants, you name it, long hair, lefty, spins, more with the flat shots and so forth and double-handed against one-handed [backhand], lefty against righty. I think it all kind of made sense, and I was able to embrace it then."

He continued, “I knew he was good [when we first played in Miami], but he surprised me to some degree that he was so consistent, so good on hard courts already so early. That really showed me he was probably going to become a World No. 1, Grand Slam champion; just a really special Spaniard who could not only play on clay but other surfaces as well. He clearly lived up to all the expectations. From then on it went; the rest we know.”

[...]

“It's special always to play against him and have these matches, for sure very important matches for both of us in our careers,” said Nadal. “So that makes our careers probably more special for both of us.

[...]

“When I go on court against him I feel it's a really special match, especially because we play always really important matches. That makes the rivalry very, very special. I don't know if rivals in the rest of the history of tennis played a lot of the matches, as many matches as we played. I don't know how many matches McEnroe/Borg or Sampras/Agassi played, but we played a lot a lot times. So that makes the match really special always.”

Added Federer, “My No. 1 rival to me it seems is Rafa. Doesn't matter how many more times I'm going to be playing all the other guys. At the moment, we have that history and nobody can take it away from us.

“We've played in so many big finals against each other and were able to play over four or five tough sets and have always shown a lot respect towards each other. So clearly those are the matches I'm really looking forward to and hoping to play my best tennis.

[...]

“I think we really get up for these kinds of matches against each other because we know the world is watching. We always have these incredible points and incredible matches against each other. The excitement is huge walking into the stadium. Those things make you nervous. So it's a good thing when that happens.”

I'm excited for this match. It'd better not let me down, seeing as I've got to be up at 7 bloody AM for it.

Can I just say, Mustard, that whilst browsing TW for a while before I joined, I thought/think that you are one of the few Ralph fans that has his head screwed on and isn't seeing everything with rose tinted spectacles. You're mostly objective, and I enjoy your posts.

I also agree as regards the rivalry :) That said, I'm not as excited as I once was. I tend to expect Roger to lose now, and am no longer upset when this occurs. Still, I do hope for an exciting game nonetheless.

It's certainly true that the rivalry's glory days seem long gone. The 2009 Australian Open final seemed to herald the end of that, for now at least. It still has that entertaining quality, though :)

Roger has actually done well against Rafa recently though, winning 2 out of 3 of their last matches. I guess its just the fact that they aren't alone at the top of the game anymore that makes the rivalry a bit less exciting.

Exactly right. Since the 2009 Australian Open final, their only official matches have been 2 consecutive Madrid finals (2009 and 2010) and the 2010 WTF final. Compare this to before when they met in 2 slam finals per year for a while, and met in multiple masters series finals per year.

Spot on re. 2009 AO.

I wish I could find the post I read late last night somewhere on here, where someone said, and I paraphrase, "Nadal can win playing his best or close to his best tennis, where as Roger can still lose playing his best...", or something like that. I couldn't agree more with this. That AO 5th set, he lost concentration etc., or the plot, or who knows what.

Also, with the way Novak is playing currently, it really no longer seems a two horse race for the slams, and that puts a spoke in the wheels re. Fedal.

I often wonder how things would have played out if Ralph was on the scene first, and then Roger turned up playing as he did in his best years. i.e. Let's swap their ages. Would it have made a difference to the outcome of the rivalry, or more importantly to Roger's mental strength?

Bah, whatever, let's just hope for a great match, even if it's only the best of 3. Just as well, because if it were to be 5, we know what Connors would take it. ;)

And as you were typing your post, I was typing a similar thought to Mustard :)

(Yes, Roger has done better recently. It's just this surface isn't his favoured.)

Seriously anything can happen in a match between these two guys, but hopefully Federer gonna get this one cause he's already 30 years old, while Nadal is still young, so i think Nadal can afford to give this one to Federer.

And hopefully Federer will be able to end Djokovic's match winning streak in the final if he wins this one.

Ah, I'm greeted by the infamous Underhand. And would you be SO KIND as to tell me why I would be a *******? After all sir, one would need proof, would they not? Or is it mere slandering that is your forte?

Dont waste your time on that little turd. He thinks he is funny by making fun of people and spewing insults.

Same. I know there are people who often like to point out that Fedal isn't the only rivalry to produce exciting matches, but for me it isn't just the match, it's also the anticipation beforehand, and the history they have together.

I can't wait :)

That said, I do find his posts amusing, at times. Thing is though, he'd be stuck on what to do if there weren't passionate fans on this forum for him to have a dig at. That's ironic.

I disagree. On a claycourt yes. Far too many of their matches were on clay. Outside of clay, Fed is obv. the better player, and although it's a worse matchup for him,Rafa needs his best to win. Fed's fifth set lapse in AO 09 wasn't just a lapse. He had lapses allover the match. He wasn't playing his best. I don't see when Fed ever lost against Nadal outside of clay, playing his best. MAYBE W08, by the massive margin of 2 points away. In fact, both make each other not look their very best, but still... I'd give PRIME Federer the edge over anyone I've ever seen on a hardcourt. No matter how screwed the matchup is for him.
